  • 3d Shadow layer with no color?

    Hello all,
I have been trying to figure out a way to make a 3d layer that only displays shadow cast onto it. In many 3d programs you can create objects that only show shadows and no actual color. Is there a way to do this in AE?

Thanks in advance for any help,

    Tim

Select the layer. Press AA. Click the shadow “value” until it says “only”.

[IanCorey] “Select the layer. Press AA. Click the shadow “value” until it says “only”.”

That is good to know but i need teh layer to receive the shadows only, not cast shadow only. Does that make sense?

[Dave LaRonde] “Whoa, think about it: if you set a layer to cast shadows only, you’ll only see a shadow on the layer accepting the shadow. Isn’t that what you’re after?

I think everyone is misunderstanding me. Basically I want a layer that acts as a “floor”, and that layer is totally invisible except that it shows shadows that are cast from other objects. I just want to see shadows without having to worry about the edges of the floor etc. If this does not make sense i can try to explain further. Thanks again….

    Recipe for shadow-catching invisible layer:

    Use a white solid.
    Set mode to Multiply.
    Accepts Shadows = on.
    Accepts Lights = off.

So far this works great. Thanks so much!

    >Use a white solid.
Set mode to Multiply.< Dan may be the only human here who understands composite modes. I just push buttons at random until I get something that looks what I think I want. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
