What exactly is the problem?

I have QT 7 installed and haven’t noticed an issue…but maybe I haven’t done the correct thing to make it known…

Hi Dave,

I’m probably not interested in the book as I wouldn’t understand most of it, but thanks.

I understand the basic way that RAM is used in the workings of a computer, but my understanding of the situation is that Opterons have an on-board memory controller and each processor has it’s own RAM. While each processor can access the other’s RAM via the HyperTransport link, it’s not the same as normal multi-processing (whatever the technical term for it may be…). Each processor attempts first to execute it’s next allocated thread via local RAM first, as utilizing HyperTransport slows things up.

So…I guess my query was whether the processors each see all the RAM that’s available to them and Windows doesn’t, or if that impacts performance. There is no indication how much local RAM each processor sees, only what Windows sees.

I’m interested mostly for personal curiousity…the dual Opteron works pretty fast so…no complaints.

Is the monitor properly calibrated?

What sort of a monitor do you use? (I’m looking at HD CRTs now…not many out there).

Interestingly enough, it COMPLETELY harnesses hyper-threading…97% both sides.

I haven’t run PPro on duals and paid much attention…I have a dual Opteron at the office I’ll check today.

On the RAM…Windows XP only recognizes 3 GB…I have four on my Opteron and I get to use three. What I don’t know is how the RAM works that way as in an Opteron dual, the RAM is assigned to each processor and I’m assuming 1 GB sticks, so does one processor use 1 GB and the other gets 2? I haven’t found anyone who can answer this for me yet…

Where was it kept? Any open windows letting sunlight hit the face near it?

…sometimes you find that, believe it or not.

Otherwise barring anything silly like that, I would say that this monitor should work pretty well for you.

What sort of work are you doing and how are you monitoring the signal?

Why did you uninstall QT 7? Where you having problems?

Silly iTunes thing aside, QT 7 actually fixed a problem with QT v6.5 player going through a dialogue asking me to insert a disk in each one of my multi-card reader slots 5 times (20 dialogues to click out of…VERY annoying)

I don’t know if any format can be said to be “better” in every circumstance than any other…the compression tool and the settings make a difference though.

The Adobe Media Encoder is OK, but ProCoder from Canopus is a more flexible transcoding tool, and the free download Windows Media Encoder also has more capabilities for creating Windows Media files.

I would say that “razor sharp” is probably the first place you’ll need to rethink…the best web video is actually relatively soft. when you start with a full PAL frame and knock it down to less than a quarter size, the smaller frame can’t possibly represent all the detail, so the video should run through some pre-processing in whatever software you use to transcode:

1. De-interlace. Cuts down the complexity of the source material so the compression is cleaner, the data rate is more efficient and it will also compress a bit faster.

2. Some compressors have the capability to deal with levels or contrast…raising the black levels slightly and lowering the peak brightness levels will also relieve some stress on the data rate and improve the “perceived” image quality.

I think that was what most of us were driving at…procedural matte in AE.

The difference key would be infinitely easier…either in AE or Premiere, but it takes some planning before the shoot of course.

Have you activated this version twice?

(Over time one does reinstallations, etc….)

You have two installations, then you need to call support and tell them why you need more… 🙂

Uninstalling the software before you trash XP and reinitialize would open up an activation provided you were conected top the web.

(I found all this out the hard way with the entire video collection as I’d installed it on several machines temporarily leading up to NAB…)

Hmmm…yes, well for now, I’d say that you’ll be dealing with it in a “surround” 5.1 channel project.

Just out of curiousity…what is it that you’ll be recording that you would acquire sound with video in 6 channel?
