Is this an ok ref-monitor for grading?
Posted by Daniel Martinez on December 2, 2005 at 2:40 pmHi I have the oportunity to buy a monitor – Sony PVM 2054 Monitor, 20″ – for 1071$ / 912 euro. I’m not willing to pay more than 945$ / 804 euro though.
It has been used for 3 years, 2 times a week.
But is it an ok monitor for grading uses? I’m working mostly with DV-footage and from Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After FX.
Any comments?
Thank you.

December 2, 2005 at 2:54 pmWhere was it kept? Any open windows letting sunlight hit the face near it?
…sometimes you find that, believe it or not.
Otherwise barring anything silly like that, I would say that this monitor should work pretty well for you.
What sort of work are you doing and how are you monitoring the signal?

it depends on what your standarts are….i find sony’s not suitable at all, it’s not a ref. monitor, the image is much to black….

Is the monitor properly calibrated?
What sort of a monitor do you use? (I’m looking at HD CRTs now…not many out there).

December 3, 2005 at 4:13 pmI think I’ll let this one go by.
I’m going to conect component signal to the monitor. I havent got an SDI output.
I want at least a cirtyfied REFERENCE monitor. Not a broadcast monitor “that is ok for grading”. I want to be sure that when things are “to dark” or “to pink” on a clients monitor, that the error is with him and not me.
Thank you for the help.
Cheers

You may run into difficulty with matching a true reference monitor to your price range…
Most broadcast monitors are pretty accurate with calibration.
