  • [Lance Bachelder] “I would fire you for attempting to set up a project this way to begin with – not because I don’t like you (which I don’t) but because it would be bad business to let you continue with this workflow. It shows a complete lack of understanding of the software/formats/ and offline/online workflow specially when it comes to HDV and timecode! PPro could easily do what you ask had you set up the project properly to begin with.”

Hmmm… Lance, how would you set up a project with double-system sound? This isn’t a waste of time BTW, as HDV MPEG compresses the sound on the videotape.

He did say that this was pre-Axio, so chances are he had to “bump” the HDV to another HD codec inside his system when the “online” was ready to go…not nearly as petite a data footprint as HDV/DV…and editing in HDV native was impossible previous to PPro v2…and not even advisable now…

…and it would benefit everyone if the tone of this conversation got back to business and left the personal stuff out.

So, Lance…do you have an alternative workflow for David?

[Mike Cohen] “the new feature which bugs me most is the titles being part of the project file – to have to export titles just to use them in another project is ridiculous -“

    Yeah…that has been voiced…extensively.

  • [David Cherniack] “I guess you know very little about editing large projects with multiple levels of subtimelines. Trim project in my case reduces a 45 hour project to 33 hours. A professional level NLE with media management will reduce my one hour timeline to one hour of material plus change. In my case I have all these sub-timelines because my material was shot double system sound and without media management there’s no way in PPro to combine the material in a lasting way without sub-timelines.”

David…I am not entirely sure what you mean. Multiple sequences with trim with the rest of the project…are your sub-timelines full of that much extra material?

If you have a one-hour timeline, PPro will trim it as you describe…what am I missing?

…and please don’t tell me how I don’t know anything about real work, just stick to the substance of the issue please.

…and since there are no project settings in PPro native that support the JVC or the Canon camera…

That’s correct, the CineForm plugin still will work with the proper, upgraded version which is in the works as we type…

The loss will be for those who used the included CineForm codec with PPro right out of the box…now it’s HDV native out of the box.

[Steven L. Gotz] “Or, you can separate into two mono tracks from the project window. Or, you can put it into a new sequence, make the changes with the audio mixer, and then use the sequence as a clip in other sequences.”

Separating the two audio tracks will create two unattached audio files (as well as one unattached video clip), which can sometimes be a PITN.

Putting it in a new sequence in itself, won’t give you individual channel control as the two channels are lumped together as one stereo channel in the mixer…you would still have to duplicate the audio portion of the clip and pan out to different sides to split channels and gain independent control (or breakout to dual mono in the project window and re-sync both audio files).

In everyday broadcast and professional work, we’re usually not trying to create stereo sound, we’re using two different mono channels to mix location sound, something that has been slow to sink in with Adobe for some reason.

One of the more annoying oversights in PPro 1 ad 1.5…

I usually Alt-click the audio (to select it and not the video) and copy/paste it to another track…effectively duplicating it…then align it so it’s synced with the original.

Then apply an audio effect called “Fill Right” to one and “Fill Left” to the other. That should get the control back for you.

January 16, 2006 at 3:12 pm in reply to: Corporate video company…

I’m not sure there are a lot of meaningful statistics.

The size of the community is part of it, but…

The kinds of companies that are there are part of it too, in addition…

The philosophy of “media use” of those companies is a factor, also…

How many competitors are already in the market will affect you, and…

Your background/experience relative to your competition is important, which will probably impact…

Fees/rates in relationship to your competitors, which should take your superior/similar/lesser experience and knowledge into account.

…all these factors intertwine to the point that I don’t think statistics of this type are really transportable from place to place.

Bottom line is that you’ll need some intuition on the market itself…and having a client or two ready to go would be the best way to start. Advertising is not a long-term method of building these types of businesses. Getting “face-time” with people after a referral has been made is the ideal way to build it, though advertising will help.

I wish I had a “Get rich fast in independent corporate media” guide to share with you…but if I knew of one, I’d probably want to read it first.

[George Socka] “Are you in fact being paid by / shilling for Adobe? Enquiring minds want to know.”

“Shilling”…classy. Also…I think the word you most likely wanted was “inquiring”…

I do Adobe training on DVD and write books about Adobe products…I am not on any payroll as a “PR plant” if that is your inference.

I do work in the field and consult for several software companies. Adobe is a company I’m very familiar with and I like and use their products and do have a chance to have some input on some aspects of their development.

Adobe happens to be a company that prefers to announce their own products and I can understand that. The reason why they bought advertising in magazines that mailed before an announcement was made is a bit beyond me, but as far as I’m concerned, that advertising was Adobe triggered and purchased, therefore it’s fair game.

The links that were up here to a publisher’s book on unreleased…and unannounced software, where several new features were mentioned was a violation of the NDA that book publisher (just like my publisher, Focal Press) signed. Removing that link was a professional courtesy from the businesspeople who run the Cow to the businesspeople who run Adobe.

If you get leaked information, call your friends, buy an ad in a newspaper, buy a billboard, but don’t make CreativeCow.net complicit in spreading information that only got out because someone violated their non-disclosure agreement. That’s the message.

There are sites that drool at running stuff like that…and usually the people who leak to them are tracked down and are never asked to enter into a confidentiality agreement again, and the leak stops.

If you don’t like it…I can’t help it.

That news reveals nothing. Wait until the 17th to see what is included in PPro 2.
