Adobe has released a major release in their Adobe Production Studio. In this article, Creativecow leader, Aanarav Sareen, an Adobe Certified Expert in Premiere, gives us an overview of the new Premiere Pro 2.0. In this review, Aanarav gives Creative Cow members a look at not only the many new features that make Premiere Pro 2 a formidable upgrade but also gives special emphasis to the new interface and integration capabilities- areas which take the new Production Studio tools to a level of seamless integration that no suite of tools in this industry has enjoyed before. Aanarav also explores the new multi-cam editing that use nested sequences and many other new features…

    No Media Management?

Aanarav, you only dock them half a point? I’d give them 2 out of 5 for the features in this release.

But no media management? Can someone with close ties to Adobe explain their thinking? Do they care whether this app is used in large professional projects? Do they have any serious commitment to the future of this app as a top level NLE? It’s hard to make he case for the affirmative based on the 18 months it’s taken for this release. It’s hard to fathom what they’ve been doing for the last 18 months.

Also can you please explain the comment about audio ratios and conforming a little better. Does it mean that all the audio over all the video in a project must be less than 2:1 to avoid conforming?

And native HDV? Please tell me that the Cineform plugin will still work.

My guess is you’ll have to buy an update from Cineform.

That’s correct, the CineForm plugin still will work with the proper, upgraded version which is in the works as we type…

The loss will be for those who used the included CineForm codec with PPro right out of the box…now it’s HDV native out of the box.

My guess is that it will be free for owners of Aspect HD, or a small upgrade fee. They have not charged us for any upgrades yet. And since everyone who edits HDV with Premiere Pro will now have to have Aspect HD or hang themselves from a high tree waiting for anything to happen (unless the have dual dual-core processors), there will be money flowing into Cineform like crazy.

…and since there are no project settings in PPro native that support the JVC or the Canon camera…

I think you are being too tough on them. It is certainly worth 2.5 Cows, not just 2. It is not my favorite release of any in the last few years, that’s for sure. I flat out hate some of the new “features”. And I will continue to use Aspect HD for all of my HDV editing.

I’ll accept 2.5 instead of 2 🙂 but I don’t see how expecting media management, after 18 months, for an NLE that is supposedly “Pro” is too tough on them.

In fact, I would seriously question the leadership of the development team. I think they’ve done an awful job from the base design on up. From lousy memory management to lousy media management, to very a very poor understanding of the batch tools that make for useability in an NLE.

I had hopes for 2. Not high hopes, but I did expect them to deal with media management and I really would love some insight on how priorities were established for this last cycle.

If people would prefer to write me in complete confidence about it they can do so at:

the new feature which bugs me most is the titles being part of the project file – to have to export titles just to use them in another project is ridiculous –

that’s many extra keystrokes, typing, folder navigation – unnecessary steps in an already busy workflow – who at Adobe came up with that idea? Do the programmers actually use these programs?

The invisible video track is a good idea, but you’ll have to remember to leave empty tracks in your sequences. Why not just marquee around multiple clips and paste attributes all at once?

Oh well, can’t fight city hall.

[Mike Cohen] “the new feature which bugs me most is the titles being part of the project file – to have to export titles just to use them in another project is ridiculous -“

    Yeah…that has been voiced…extensively.
