  • L / R Audio?

All of the video I have gotten till now has been done with one mic, I just received some current video shot with dual XLR mics. I captured the video as I normally would and when I bring a clip into the timeline I end up with the l/r audio showing up in the “audio 1” both tracks clearly visable, I cannot make level changes to the left audio without affecting the right audio or vice versa.
Is there a way to split the “audio 1” track to end up with “audio 1” holding the right and “audio 2” holding the left, so I can make adjustments without affecting the other?
Or is there a to recapture the video in PP1.5 to acheive the same result?

One of the more annoying oversights in PPro 1 ad 1.5…

I usually Alt-click the audio (to select it and not the video) and copy/paste it to another track…effectively duplicating it…then align it so it’s synced with the original.

Then apply an audio effect called “Fill Right” to one and “Fill Left” to the other. That should get the control back for you.

Or, you can separate into two mono tracks from the project window. Or, you can put it into a new sequence, make the changes with the audio mixer, and then use the sequence as a clip in other sequences.

[Steven L. Gotz] “Or, you can separate into two mono tracks from the project window. Or, you can put it into a new sequence, make the changes with the audio mixer, and then use the sequence as a clip in other sequences.”

Separating the two audio tracks will create two unattached audio files (as well as one unattached video clip), which can sometimes be a PITN.

Putting it in a new sequence in itself, won’t give you individual channel control as the two channels are lumped together as one stereo channel in the mixer…you would still have to duplicate the audio portion of the clip and pan out to different sides to split channels and gain independent control (or breakout to dual mono in the project window and re-sync both audio files).

In everyday broadcast and professional work, we’re usually not trying to create stereo sound, we’re using two different mono channels to mix location sound, something that has been slow to sink in with Adobe for some reason.

Separating the two tracks becomes almost irrelevant when placed in a new sequence. The only thing in the sequence is that one clip and the two audio channels. If it is a stereo sequence with additional mono tracks created, then it will show up as stereo in the “main” sequence when you nest the “adjustment” sequence.

Also, the mixer does allow you to adjust the volume of the individual channels. Just apply the Channel Volume filter.
