That means that the project file is corrupt. That’s also why it’s not showing in FCP X- it’s no longer a project file so far as FCP X is concerned.

The graphics card helps because it has off board GPU processing. This is like adding lots of additional CPU cores to your system. Your own tests give you an idea of what a faster disk drive can do – the 10K Velociraptor is the fastest of all of your drives.
An SSD writes and reads data even faster than that drive.
Keep in mind these numbers:
5400 RPM disk – approx 60MB/sec maximum sustainable I/O
7200 RPM disk – approx 110MB/sec maximim sustainable I/O
10K RPM disk – approx 140MB/sec maximum sustainable I/OOn the other hand, most 250GB+ SSD drives average around 400MB/sec or more.
However, I would start with a less expensive test – purchase 3 7200 RPM, 1TB SATA disks. Place them into the three bays in your Mac Pro. Using Disk Utility, create a 3 disk striped array. This results in you getting the capacity and performance of 3 drives (should be around 310MB/sec). Try your render with that volume as your working environment and you’ll see even better speed than the Velociraptor.
If you do decide to move to SSD, I would still recommend the 3 drive stripe option – buy three 250GBs instead of one 750GB. In my Mac Pro 4,1 using 3 Samsung EVO 840 500GB drives gives me incredible numbers. Connecting the SSDs to a PCIe SAS card makes this even faster. I see I/O numbers in the 1.2-1.4GB/sec range.
However, if your options are a single SSD or 3 7200RPM HDDs in a stripe, I’d go with the 3 HDD drive stripe. Plus you get much greater capacities for the same money in that case.

We use a lot of the Seagate Thunderbolt adapter units (~$99). Powered by the Thunderbolt bus. they work with both spinning and SSD units and we have them all over. They are dead-end units, though.

Reinis – I’m a bit late to the party here, but We have seen issues with heat in the SANS Digital TR4 and TR8 chassis. In each case, loading the chassis with the full compliment of drives almost always resulted in the last drive in the case (closest to the power supply) to drop off. To solve this permanently, we now only load 3 or 7 drives or we run the units with the doors off and additional fans blowing into the fronts of the chassis. Keep an eye on drive 8. I suspect you’ll be revisiting this sooner or later.
We’ve reported it to SANS Digital, but nothing has been heard since before last year’s NAB. The chassis are just too inexpensive for our short term lab projects to stop using ( we have 4 4s and 3 8s).

This is what I was getting at with PP and AE not using the ATI GOUs currently. PP, AE, and ME are much faster on my Z820 than my nMP. But, Adobe have indicated that an upcoming CC update will include the ATI support on the Apple system, so this will need to be reevaluated once the Adobe update drops.

That app would make it easier to point the “Program Files” and “Program Files (x86)” folders to the second SSD and not worry about the various installers.

While I do love my Z820, when I run Windows in Boot Camp on my nMP, the numbers for non-Adobe stuff tell a dramatically different story. One real tell is in the way Sony Vegas responds. Since it’s GPU-agnostic, I feel that it’s a good example. The same clips in Vegas on the nMP under Windows 7 are processed much faster than the same clips in the same Vegas on the HP under Windows 7.It also handles a couple of the deep 3D games I play more smoothly at very high settings.
Those ATI GPUs are amazing when they are utilized properly.

You could do that, but it makes things more difficult in managing the boot process or recovery should the boot disk go South on you.
My way allows you to recover or rebuild the boot disk without interfering with your apps.
