  • How should I set up my disks?

Posted by Justin Hawley on January 30, 2014 at 3:46 pm

Hi all! I have to reformat my disks, and figured it would be a great time to ask about what drives I should use for system, media cache, project files, raid, etc.

    I have the following:
    2x 250GB SanDisk SSD drives
    2x 1TB Samsung 7200 HDD
    1x 1TB Hitachi 7200 HDD

    I have 8GB RAM, 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5770 at 850mhz core clock, and a AMD Phenom II X4 965 processor on a GA-770T-USB3 (Socket M2)motherboard.

I really could use some guidance here! I mostly do corporate videos, with the occassional commercial and I frequently use color correction. On occassion, I also make some AE projects, although it doesn’t seem like very intense projects at this state in my career.

Thank you for any input you can give!

    Justin.

I should mention I am normally editing DVCPro50 codec as I shoot 720pn from my Panasonic Hvx 200a.

I would use 1 SSD for boot and OS, the second SSD for apps. I would then create a striped dynamic disk from the three 1TB drives for performance and capacity.

Awesome. So you would install the apps on the second SSD. What about My Documents and such? Any reason to take them off the boot and OS drive? Thanks Tim!

    Would you use a RAID0?

Ok, final question. What about the Media, Projects, Pagefile, Media Cache, Previews, and Exports? Put them all on the RAID? Or put some of them on one of the SSD drives? If so, which ones?

I’d put all of your media onto the Dynamic striped array. You’ll see around 380MB/sec which is plenty for everything that you’re doing in PP and AE.

Yes, striping is RAID 0, but when you manage the disks in the Windows Disk Manager, they are referred to as Striped Volumes. To create the dynamic volume, see this guide:

    Creating a Striped Dynamic Volume

As for your normal Windows stuff, I’d just leave it on the normal C: drive.

I have a gentleman saying that I should consider putting the SD drives in a RAID0 as well. Any reason you would recommend not doing this as well? Thanks Tim!

You could do that, but it makes things more difficult in managing the boot process or recovery should the boot disk go South on you.

My way allows you to recover or rebuild the boot disk without interfering with your apps.

Just to add, there is a neat little program called Junction Link Magic (https://www.rekenwonder.com/linkmagic.htm) that let’s you point certain default locations to another drive. I use it for the Pictures folder, Google Chrome cache, Lightroom Catalog and other non-critical locations which can rapidly fill up a smaller SSD.
