What about the “Library Backups Location” folder that’s assigned in the “Preferences” -> “General” panel? Have you set that up as you want it? Does it not do what you expect?

They work fine for what each app does – browsing or approval. Physical proximity is not an issue since it’s network-based. I’ve not tried using them with earlier versions, but these are for use with the CatDV Server and Web setup, not the Desktop platforms.
However, viability for your needs can only truly be assessed by you – and, the apps are both free! Install them and see for yourself.

Have you tried dragging the clips from the Finder into the Library that you’ve created?
Also, can you play the “missing” clips in the GoPro tools?

Your HBA doesn’t support I/O blocks of 512K. While raw LTFS allows you to set other block sizes when you format a tape, the HP StoreOpen app does not. Additionally, using other blocks sizes can make your LTFS volumes incompatible with other platforms’ / vendors’ LTFS configurations.
The only solution is to change your SAS HBA for a card that supports larger block sizes – we recommend ATTO Technology R680 (RAID) and H680 (non-RAID) cards even for Windows and Linux.

I’ve also locked our Mac servers to 10.7.5 (Mac Pro 1,1 and Xserve). If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

It is unfortunate, but we’ve found that out of all of the available SAS HBAs out there, ONLY the ATTO Technology cards work with tape on the Mac platform. It’s specific to two items – the maximum block size for I/O and the heat management on the card. Most of these devices are designed for Disk I/O – a bit here and a bit there. Unfortunately, tape runs data as one huge gulp. This can seriously overheat cards not designed for the long period sustained I/O that tape demands – sometimes days on end.
The ATTO cards keep things streaming even at block sizes of 8MB and sustained I/O of over 2 weeks (around 200TB to LTO-6).
This is why we ONLY use ATTO with our solutions.

The answer is simple – you can’t use an Areca card successfully with tape.
You’ll need to move to ATTO’s R680 (for RAID) or H680 (non-RAID).

Try using a different server for one main system and then sync all of your other systems to that one master.
I’ve loaded up OS X server on one system and then use pool.ntp.org for the server and sync all of the other systems to that OS X Server system.
This has resolved a LOT of time-related issues around here for all of our systems, not just Macs.

I definitely believe that the old Mac Pros still have a lot of life in them with proper updates.
My recommendation to you is that you look into an external USB 4 drive chassis and move all of your existing drives into it. You won’t even need to worry about the contents of the drives as they will just show up as they are now.
Here’s one that I use in a lot of instances:
Mediasonic HF2-SU3S2 ProBox 4 Bay Hard Drive Enclosure
Even though it’s USB 3, it works fine as USB 2. This would free up those 3 internal drive bays for the array.
