There are two possible causes for this:
A doubling of the inclusion of the sudoers.d folder –
- Open a Terminal
- Execute:
sudo -s
visudo - Using the arrow/cursor keys, scroll to the bottom of the file
- With the cursor position on the line that reads #includedir /etc/sudoers.d type “dd” (two d’s)
- That line will disappear
- To save the file and exit the editor type “:wq” and hit enter
The second is because the BRU_CMDS entry has been added multiple times to the /etc/sudoers file directly –
- Open a Terminal
- Execute:
sudo -s
visudo - Using the arrow/cursor keys, scroll to the bottom of the file
- Find a line that reads:
Cmnd_Alias BRU_CMDS = - You should see 1 or more duplicates of that line
- Using “dd” as above, delete all but one of the entries
- To save the file and exit the editor type “:wq” and hit enter

Hi Ken, it’s really odd that you’re seeing faster writes than reads with that unit.
Please PM me the RMA number on your return so that I can have the unit pulled and run through a full postmortem. Definitely not our normal result.

What version of BRU PE are you using?
Otherwise, have you given the terminal steps a shot? They really do work.

We’re getting very close to the release of SoftRAID 6 as well as seeing the Big Sur 11.2 issue resolved in the11.3 update. I suspect that your speeds are related to the performance of your disks and the number involved. This is why I suggest the newer 10GB+ drives. They average over 150MB/s and if you stripe 8 of them, you can easily see sustainable rates of 1GB/sec.
You can order off of the site (www.macsale.org) or call in – which ever works for you.

Cost of living, large concentration of aerospace and NASA campuses (we are “Rocket City”), friendly people, reliable power and water, friendly and helpful police and sheriffs, outstanding and non-presumptuous food, Rivers, Creeks, Lakes, Rain, Nashville, fishing 365 days a year, great golf without the threat of death after 9AM, Roads that are not in contention for “Best Manual Solution for Passing a Kidney Stone”. This move was an upgrade on every level ?.
Oh, and did I mention NASHVILLE???

Hi Howard, did you try to use the BRU PE Tape Import Tool that is part of your BRU PE Install? I know that Jim ran into issues, but the vast majority of users use it successfully.
As for the Terminal, if you write protect your tapes and follow the steps that we outlined for Jim, there’s nothing that you can do wrong in the terminal outside of getting a commadn error that you can easily retype. The Terminal’s not as dangerous a place as many would lead you to believe.

Hi Ken,
While I have a vested interest in OWC product sales, I will recommend that you take a look at the OWC Thunderbay 8 unit here:
https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/thunderbay-8/thunderbolt-3You can purchase it preloaded or as an empty chassis and load your own disks.
I use one loaded with 16TB drives for a total of 128TB and then use the SoftRAID RAID 5 layout for 104TB Formatted. I was using this BEFORE I became an OWC employee.
To get the best speeds, I would recommend newer 10TB or larger drives so that you can achieve the sustained I/O performance that you’re looking for.

All of the information needed to understand the catalog structure in a BRU PE environment is included in the User’s Guide in Appendix B: Tape / Archive / Catalog Design Notes.
Each catalog is a compressed text file, so no special database manipulation required.
To compare the tape against the info in the catalogs folder, use the “Identify Tape” button on the Tools panel.
https://www.tolisgroup.com/assets/bru-pe-user-guide-3.1.pdf
Or, you can use the Import Tool and tell it to overwrite the known tape.

Philip, I’ve shared your note with the tech team on SoftRAID for macOS. I know that they are working on a permanent resolution for the security bypass, and the new documentatin for SoftRAID 6 is a huge improvement.
