OWC – Tolis Group – BRU Status
Posted by Ray Tragesser on December 28, 2020 at 5:38 pmHi All,
It’s been a bit since the announcement of OWC taking over BRU. Any updates on BRU heading into 2021?

January 4, 2021 at 6:07 pmWe’re getting close. The Black Friday through Christmas sales stymied the efforts to get things crossed over, but they’re now on track for a January re-launch.

February 7, 2021 at 1:58 amI need some Bru Pe support and OWC does not seem to have anyone who is familiar with the product to offer any support. I need to restore some tapes made with Bru Pe but no longer have the catalog for them. I am at a loss and need some help. I understand that this may be possible with the command line, but am not sufficiently proficient to do it myself. Any help would be appreciated.

February 7, 2021 at 8:00 pmSince you asked for “any help,” I’ll point you to a thread that helped me restore the entire contents of a tape using a Terminal window. I’m still a Terminal dummy. I suggest you start at the bottom of the thread and work backwards. Somewhere in there are the commands and syntax I used to do what you’re asking about:

A very kind man named James Vorley helped me tremendously.

February 11, 2021 at 4:24 pmThank you very much. That is my situation as well – terminal novice and need to use terminal. I will gratefully take your suggestion until OWC gets it together.

February 12, 2021 at 12:12 amI am hoping to find anyone here who might consult on a recovery similar to Jim’s as I am not good enough with terminal to get very far.

February 13, 2021 at 12:27 amHi Howard, did you try to use the BRU PE Tape Import Tool that is part of your BRU PE Install? I know that Jim ran into issues, but the vast majority of users use it successfully.
As for the Terminal, if you write protect your tapes and follow the steps that we outlined for Jim, there’s nothing that you can do wrong in the terminal outside of getting a commadn error that you can easily retype. The Terminal’s not as dangerous a place as many would lead you to believe.

February 13, 2021 at 2:01 amI did try it without success. It seems not to recognize every other tape. Is there anyone you are aware of who I could hire to consult?>

February 14, 2021 at 12:24 amWhat version of BRU PE are you using?
Otherwise, have you given the terminal steps a shot? They really do work.

Hi Tim,
Any movement on BRU / OWC as its been a couple of months? I can appreciate it takes time to sort out all new business ventures but at the same time your user base cannot be left in limbo indefinitely. In my situation I need to change operating systems to be able to run the latest version of Davinci Resolve and that operating system will break my existing BRU installation. As much as I would like to wait and see what BRU and OWC come up with, I am at the crossroads of making a decision to go in another direction.
Can you possibly give an update and a timeline for OWC releasing an updated version of BRU?
Thanks,
Ray

March 16, 2021 at 2:29 amI would also like to know the status of BRU/Argest at OWC. Please let me know ASAP. The latest version of Argest (June 1 2020) produces errors when attempting to import the BRU PE environment.
