But it makes up for that with render time. Although I do think it’s results are somewhat better than motions, but only just. Rafael is correct about NOTHING being able to do what a camera can do in this instance.

60D is more expensive… well certainly in the UK. I have a T2i and its awesome. Good debate to be had here actually, I mean, in terms of image quality, the T2i is easily as good as some 4grand cameras…. yes yes yes i KNOW there are many disadvantages with DSLRs but Im talking abut video quality… I dunno why theyre considered consumer… I mean the 7D for example, is a pro/semipro stills camera. I would easily consider it on a par with a “prosumer” video camera…

Sorry if I soudned argumentative, and I totally understand what you’re saying, but the OP didnt want portability, and if you’re looking at ‘professional’ stuff such as broadcast monitors and have the budget for the kind of equipment, but DONT need portability, a macbook pro is severely underpowered in comparison to what could be bought for the same amount of money. Also, when you talk about portability , just out of interest do you take all of that stuff with you? If not, how do you capture on location? Where is it stored on location?

Essentially youre still only talking about one external connections, and as I said, the ONLY thing you can use to expand is the Esata connection. Which it has one of. Personally, I would rather edit to an ethernet RAID and have FAR more rendering power in the processor etc than buy a macbook pro. Especially as most camera up until about £8k dont require anything more than a FW800 RAID, if that. There’s always a workaround, and you can now put in a SATA connection into an imac (yes it voids the warranty, but the option is there).
All I know is that rendering is the bane of my existence, and at the end of the day the only thing which really helps is the processor. iMacs have far superior processor power.

Don’t knock it till you try it.”Ive tried it, and am knocking it- they’re simply not as powerful, and for the same price you can have far superior hardware. The only advantage of the upper Macbook Pro models is the sata connection, and that’s it. How do you mean expendable? Why is something which costs the exact same amount of money more expendable?

Crikey- if the budget allows it NEVER get a macbook pro. I dont understand this at the moment- people all over the place getting Macbook Pros for editing, and they dont even need portability. NO! Get a Mac Pro- FAR faster. Or an iMac i7, FAR faster. Macbook pros IMHO should be used only for ‘on the field’ editing stations (when needed), or as secondary work stations or capture computers.
But yeah, going back to the original post, a G4 with FCP 5 in incredibly outdated hardware and software. Get the latest of everything the budget allows for, and everything will be gravy!

That seemed to be a longthread basically concluding a few things (I have the 27″ iMac i7 so can confirm them):
The iMac you want is brilliant, very powerful and fine for editing anything from Graphics to HD footage. It does not have a Sata connection, which would void the warranty to put in, but may be worth it. The iMac in comparison to A MacBook pro is a silly comparison; the iMac is a proper quad core with hyper threading. The MacBook pro isn’t even a quad core, it’s a dual core with a newer architecture. If you don’t need portability, for crying out loud get the iMac, WAYYYYYYY more power and “bang for your buck”.
The mac pro is much better again, for obvious reasons; it works differently and has features such as quick channel, Sata connections and upgradeability which help a lot, but still, most editing can be done on the iMac with few problems.😀

You don’t strictly speaking HAVE to convert the files, but they’re encoded to H264 on record, which is a horrible editing codec. Use the log and transfer utility with FCP and encode them to Apple Prores 422. The 24p thing is fine….

Yeah totally understand, I mean my old Mac Plus is still working so I use that for all my editing, and it only takes a few months to do anything… I mean why upgrade when it’s still working how it used to huh?
Same with this new fangled Blue Ray stuff, I mean I’m still on Beta Max and it’s FINE… Don’t understand the fuss personally!

Also, if it’s going on and off as you describe, that doesn’t sound like a problem with Mail. Software either works or doesn’t, its not programmer play with your head intermittently. So I’d be surprised if there’s not more afoot; what that sounds more like to me is that (ironically) Mail is just picking up on an issue more than entourage or something. Oh well, get a later version and all will be sorted.
