  • Mac alternative to MS Outlook

Posted by Bob Cole on January 12, 2011 at 9:21 pm

I did the search, but found only older posts answering this question: I have lived on Outlook on a PC for a long time, and would like to find a robust Outlook alternative on the Mac, mainly so I can use my MBP on location.

I’d prefer an all-in-one solution, which will also allow for easy import of my Outlook files from the PC: Calendar, scheduling, address book, email, folders.

I’d also like something that I can eventually migrate to a cellphone, and would prefer something that would not tie me into the iPhone, should I wind up with an Android.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

    Mail?
A few points here: Microsoft did not make the outlook files particularly accessible for other programs, so importing everything may be a little tricky, but seeing as you’re on outlook at the moment, if your email account is either imap or exchange then it will sync anyway so no worry. If you have an email which is with your Internet provider then please change to a more sensible one- I spend SO much time telling people this. Go Gmail, it’s easier.

Anyway as for your other things like calendar, I’m not sure how easy this’ll be, and it depends on what versions you have. https://lucaschan.com/weblog/2007/01/30/moving-outlook-calendar-items-to-mac-os-x-ical/ is an idea for what you need to be looking for though.

iCal can also sync with Android.

Basically, Apple have thought of everything, please don’t be one of those users who buys Outlook for Mac because they’re afraid of change; the combo of Mail, iCal and Address Book will take care of you.

It may be a bit pricey, but what about just using Outlook? Office 2011 for Mac now includes Outlook (replacing Entourage). It looks like you can even just copy your PST files over to your Mac.

What’s wrong with the Apps built into the Mac OS ie Mail, Address Book, and iCal. They work amazingly.

Ofcource Microsoft does make Outlook for the Mac.

Please people stop recommending Outlook for mac…. nothing wrong with it, just dont understand why spend all that money for that programme when these days it gives you no advantages and doubles the price of office. 😀

One of our guys was a windows guy for a long time. He eventually made the leap to OS X completely and used OS X apps.
iCal, Address Book and Apple Mail integrate very nicely and sync with my phone (and will also sync with google).
If you really want to, you can go get MS Office 2011 and have the stuff you have now, but you can also use the built in tools and be very happy. You can automagically add things to your calendar and acknowledge meetings and add new contacts to address book. You can do it all from within Mail.

I personally prefer Apple’s built in tools (Mail, iCal, Contacts). I suggested Outlook for the Mac since that seemed to be exactly the solution the original user seemed to be looking for. As for price, I agree that it’s a bit pricey for what you’re getting, but if someone has a lot of data tied up in a PST it can be very tedious to convert to another format and the time spent doing the conversion (assuming you could otherwise be billing that time or doing other productive work) could offset the price of Office.

The problem with Mail is that its not setup for corporate environments. That is, it does not do Exchange servers at all. Your only choice is to use Entourage or Office 2011 for Mac. Microsoft was smart on this one… Apple is tight on their software and hardware, just as Microsoft is with their software.

Now, I do find it funny that my iPhone does Exchange mail just fine, BUT, MacOS X Mail cannot. Go figure.

If you don’t fit into this category, you’re fine with what you’ve got.

    That is WRONG.

Mail has supported exchange for quite a few years now. Since 10.5 came out.

Wayne, the latest OS upgrade, Snow Leopard, fully supports Microsoft Exchange and eradicated in most cases the need for Outlook. Entourage is horrible. The main reason still buy it is due to familiarity (a weak excuse imho) and for transferring from old accounts…

Well… Let correct myself. It works with newer versions of Exchange Server. We are using Exchange 2003 on our servers and its a crap shoot at best using Mail for our corporate email. It disconnects and reconnects all throughout the day. I’ve spent hours trying to sync with our email server and I’m using all the same settings as with Entourage.

So, technically, yes, it does support Exchange but not fully. I have no issues or problems with my iPhone, though.
