Since your ourput will be HDV 1080i, your pictures need to be at least 1440 x 1080 non-square pixels (PAR 1.33). Since pictures acontain square pixels, the size should be at least 1.33 x 1440 = 1916 pixels width and 1080 pixels high.
Since you want to apply panning, multiply these svalues by 2. That is usually sufficient for the panning.
And for pictures with transparancy, PNG is indeed OK. For the pictures not containing transparancy, you can just leave them as .jpg.

When you use increased speed (either Ctrl-dragging and/or velocity envelop) in combination with nested files, there is no limitation…

When you add a new particle, you can choose whether you want to use the existing image transparancy or whether you would like to use a certain color (e.g. your black background) as transparancy.

To create particles from a masked image is very easy. There are several ways to do this.
Add the emitter you want to use as a starting point, to the stage window.
Right click on the emitter and select PROPERTIES
Open the PARTICLES tab
Open the CHANGE SHAPE tab
Press the ADD NEW SHAPE TO LIBRARY button
Browse to your file
choose the settings you need (they speak for them selves, but you can always ask about them) and press OK
press the MAKE ACTIVE buttonTheo
