‘Jpgs are NOT a very good idea’
Scott Francis is suffering from memory problems. So everything he can do to save memory, he should do. And if you don’t take it from me that Vegas likes jpg’s as much as it likes PNGs, maybe you do accept the words from my favorite Vegas author DSE?

If you go to DIT-PREFERENCES-PLUGINS, you can inactivate the extra plugin folder.

OK. The strange thing is that there is no problem with DV-avi files created in Vegas 9.

If you have Production Assistant, you can do it without renaming. (And this week Sony is selling Production Assistant with 25% reduction…)

If you make the width 1916 px and the height 1080 px, you can keep the square pixels.
The resolution in photoshop should be 72.
And use whenever possible JPG files, since they require less memory then PNG. Also increase the size of the pictures (e.g. 2*2 times ) only for the pictures you want to apply a pan/zoom.

I believe you are looking for the following:
Create three video tracks
Place the white text on black on the upper track
Place the filling for the text on the middle track
Place the background on the lower track
Add the mask generator fx to the upper track (choose luminance)
Make the middle track a child of the upper track
Set the uppertrack to multiply (mask)mode.
