I have often wanted to take (cut out) an image of something from one source and have it blend in with the color scheme/range of another destination photo so it makes it look like the source photo object belongs with the environment/color range of the destination image.

To add a face to Mount Rushmore for example I tried importing the photo into Illustrator and then used LiveTrace to simplify it and then taking that image and used Darken to merge it with the rocks in Adobe After Effects. It blended pretty well but still doesn’t look like it belongs. It also doesn’t look too 3D ish.

I’m sure Photoshop is the tool I should use and I imagine there is more then one way or technique to do this but I would like some ideas of how to best approach this type of problem.
