The easiest way is to film the dog in front of a blue screen and use the keying filters in Vegas.
I think it is almost impossible to create a convincing mask of the running dog by hand. Unless you go for rotoscoping, e.g. in Photoshop CS3, (very timeconsuming!).
Maybe the new BCC MotionKeyUnit could be of any help for you to isolate the running dog from the background. But then you will need to have either Boris RED, Boris FX or Premiere/After Effects (or any other program where this unit will plug into.)

Anothe advantage of nesting is that you can still adjust or change your original project and the new project with the nested file will be updated automatically.

Render to new track is similar to render to DV-avi in terms of render-time. First you invest time to render part of your project and you gain time when you do the final render of your project.
Nesting means that you import your projectfile into another project. Thus save and close your project, open a new project and drag your first projectfile from the explorer (or from windows explorer) onto the timeline of the new project. You will obtain one videotrack and one audio track, which contains the whole project. It does not involve rendering, so it is very fast. However, you will still need time for rendering during the final rendering of your project.

An alternative for RENDER TO NEW TRACK which does not require rendering is nesting the project into a new project. This will also give you the flattened phenotype.
