Yes, you are missing something.
Title 3D (from Boris) is INCLUDED with all FCP versions since 3 or 4.
Anyone buliding titles using the FCP “native” title generators
and not Title 3D is “missing the boat”. -
AFTER you capture the longer clips in FCP, just select that captured file and choose “DV Start/Stop Detect” from the Mark menu and every time the camera was stopped a new scene will be “created”.
It works in just a few seconds. -
Forget the built-in (so-called) stabilizer.
For $59 get a GREAT one.

Why not do what the “news guys” have been doing for decades when there is no “pool feed” provided for audio.
Attach YOUR mic to THIER mic with gaffer tape (use a very small mic) and attach it to a wireless transmitter (or another independent camcorder or audio deck) under the podium.
That way, you are in control of the audio at the mic position, not some dude who may have been taking advantage of the open bar that day.

HDV, by design, will “break” during tha capture, each time the camcorder was paused during the shoot.

I can honestly say I NEVER have problems with Log and Capture when I’ve marked my INs and OUTs and then Batch Captured using a DV deck (or camcorder) connected via FireWire.
You didn’t say WHAT your “VCR” was or how it was connected.
Can you be VERY SPECIFIC as to your set-up, so we might be a bit more helpful?
