The XL1s does NOT shoot at 24P anyway. It has a “frame” mode but that’s it.

Buy the book “The Five Cs of Cinematography” by Joseph V. Mascelli ($30 retail). Read it with a friend while you have your camera in hand. This is the single most valuable tool there is for learning camera techniques. When to be low, when to be high, cinematic time and space. I have all of my students buy and read this book before starting classes.
Use a tripod only when necessary. Always use a jib or a dolly. They’re available cheap.

Are you playing back 23.98? Most LCDs will not display 23.98 or 24fps properly. Several years ago, we took our Sony F-900 camera into an Electronics store and plugged it into their DA. We set the frame rate at 23.98 to see what would happen. What we found was that all of the plasmas would display properly but NONE of the LCDs would give us a proper picture. Sometime it was crammed to one side or it would only show part of it. Two monitors from the same company would express themselves differently. Again, every plasma in the house handled 24P (Progressive) just fine. And that’s another thing. Some LCDs will not display a progressive sequence regardless of frame rate.

Find a menu that says “Frequency”
On an HDW machine, it’s # 013. SCrew with it from there. You’ll have to turn the machine off then on.
I’ve never been in a F500 machine. Is the manual on-line so we could look at it?

I am not poking fun at anyone, just going over the basics to make sure some item wasn’t overlooked. We are not informed as to how much experience the users have so we have to start at the bottom and work up from there.
Many times, a simple cable will be the problem. They can work one day and not the next.

Is it at the beginning ?
If so, open the lid (there is a tiny release tab on the side, near the door) and use a pencil eraser on the hub underneeth the cassette to roll the tape back onto the take up reel. If you don’t fully understand what I am saying, take it to a production company nearby. It would help quite a bit if you gave a little more info on where you are instead of saying SoCal. Are you in LA or Tijuana?This is why one should NEVER eject a tape when it is in the middle of the reel. Always rewind to the beginning, except, of course, when removing the tape at the end of your shoot.
You should also take a good look at the machine that caused the problem. This can be an isolated event but tape machines have been doing this ever since the invention of the cassette.

Did you follow the instructions?
Did you go to the BMD website and download the installer?
Do you have a 9 pin RS422 deck?
Do you have a proper cable?
The deck control works from the 9 pin control connector on the Multibridge, not the USB ports on the computerIs this your first time setting up something of this level or are you a firewire person?
