Why in the world would you shoot an indie feature on BetaSP? There are so many better options that have the ability to shoot 24 frame footage.
We shot a feature on 29.97 DVCAM and it was a lot of work to film-look every frame to make it seem like it was shot on film.
Not to bash BetaSP as it was our production format for more than a decade but it is not the format for a feature. If I were you, I’d get my hands on an Pro34 and a prime lens for a few hours and do some tests on some interiors and exteriors and process them in post to see what you end up with.

You could run your firewire through a Focus Enhancements video mixer on it’s way into the NLE. You can then monitor and adjust the levels before recording them to hard drive.
When someone advises you to record it right in the first place, they are simply living in a perfect world where everything goes as planned and there are no glitches or problems. Ignore them completely. They are not on the same planet as we are.
My biggest beef with firewire is that there is so little support for it. But, after all, it was designed for consumer use only and it was dragged, kicking and screaming into the professional world.

We, too, use the PVR LX1 and we asked Pioneer when we would see the ability to plug in a couple of dual layer drives and they replied that they didn’t think the dual layer burners were up to the task. Pioneer makes them. What’s the problem? It’s like they don’t believe in their own product.

Even the most professional camera will lose sync after a while unless they are cabled together. We’ve run extensive tests with Sony DigiBeta and others and when you power down, there is a hesitation in the time code for some unknown reason. Unless we keep a cable running from an “outie” on one and an “innie” on the other, the time code will drift, even if both cameras are running in record the whole time. It shouldn’t happen but it does.
