Eric, several other people have mentioned the 2011 close-out deals for the Canon HFM 4 series also so I guess I’d better check them out. I might get lucky finding a used or refurbed one. I haven’t looked at the 5 series.
I must say that I’m a bit leary of 60p and very leary of AVCHD but it seems that even the Canons now use AVCHD (or at least they say they are compliant with AVCHD).
I saw a great deal on a used Panasonic HDC-TM700 Prosumer camera but after doing a lot of searching and finally finding and downloading native 1080p60 AVCHD AC3 5.1 video clips (28 Mbps stream rate, not 24 Mbps which is the highest that complies with the AVCHD spec as I understand it) I couldn’t even edit them on my 5 year old computer (which was high-end at the time) and my Vegas Movie Studio HD 10 NLE! To think about having to convert them and go the “proxy” editing route in Vegas is not very appealing even if I could find a converter that would preserve the 5.1 6-channel audio track (no luck so far).

Thanks Mike but I already own Cakewalk Sonar, a high-end pro audio editing and mixing application. What I need (and don’t want to spend the money on) is an unlimited track videoeditor, not audio editor.

John, I discovered this after I posted but I was hoping there was some better method that I was missing. Bummer. Very tedious and error prone and do it this way. 🙁

Thanks John. Just what I suspected. Disappointing. I don’t know what other opinions are, but it seems to me that once Sony bought Sonic Foundry from a bunch of hot-shot developers in Wisconsin, technological advances came to a snail’s pace. 🙁

If ProRes encoder for Windows is free, no problem…I’ll try it. I see only free decoders online, since Apple wants PC users to be able to play their files obviously.

Thanks Daniel. Now why couldn’t Sony have just said that in their help files (or made it easy to find if they did say it!). 🙂

November 22, 2010 at 8:24 pm in reply to: Frustrating not having auto-brightness, auto-contrast, auto-color effectsI probably didn’t make it clear that I am using Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0 (I’m only a very advanced amateur), which is the consumer version. It looks like these filters are for the pro version. Just to make sure, I’ve emailed Mike and await a reply.

November 22, 2010 at 8:17 pm in reply to: Frustrating not having auto-brightness, auto-contrast, auto-color effectsThanks John. Glad I’m at least not missing anything obvious. You seem pretty active on this forum. Thanks for the reply. BTW, I am trying to help this poor guy out. Amazing to me he owns a $5,000 Pro Panasonic camera and doesn’t really know the first thing about shooting video and certainly doesn’t seem to know anything technical about computers, digital editing, codecs, formats, etc. Oh well.

November 22, 2010 at 8:14 pm in reply to: Dissappointed with Movie Studio 10 HD Platinum ProducerThanks Mike. No question there is some truth to this. Even so, some of the issues are more “bug-like” and not related to just slow response. I’m able to edit some AVCHD videos fine so it’s a bit of a mystery. I’ll anxiously await their first major patch but as always, Sony gives very low priority to Vegas–at least the consumer Studio version that I have, and that’s always annoying.

August 31, 2010 at 3:23 pm in reply to: Dissappointed with Movie Studio 10 HD Platinum ProducerThanks so much. I also noticed that many of the problems involve odd colors and flashes in the preview window which then actually get rendered in the output file. My other major issue is impossibly slow speed when editing, but that could be due to my older computer (4 years), which handles ver 9 fine but is struggling with ver 10.
I think this certainly confirms it’s not my PC or configuration but some pretty severe bugs in this version. The good news I guess is that the new effects and plug-ins now show up in my version 9! At least that’s a “consolation prize” before they release the first patch.
