First of all, this is my first post as a new member so I’m glad to find another Vegas forum!

I installed version 10 this past weekend and while I’m thankful for some features and plug-ins that are very welcome, and thankful for the extra tracks, overall I’m disappointed. For me, on my WinXP Pro SP3, Intel Dual-Core 2.0 gHz CPU, 3.5 GB RAM computer, it runs AVCHD files so slowly that it is impossible to edit using the preview window. These files actually ran better in version 9! Furthermore, the program is “flaky” (that’s a technical term) and crashed 6 times inside of 8 hours when ver 9 never crashes. This is on the same computer using the same settings and the same codecs.

It especially seems to have problems with multiple tracks of video using the chroma key plug-in. At one point after adding a new chroma key track and using the Deform plug-in also, the preview window showed random color bars (distorted because of the Deform plug-in) at various frames of the video where the new track video should have showed up making it completely useless. I thought perhaps the problem was with the preview function but when I rendered the video, the odd color bars were there also.

Has anyone else had multiple problems with version 10?

I know they will fix these problems eventually and I also broke my own cardinal rule of never buying version X.0 of ANY software, but it’s still disappointing to have to revert back to using version 9, which is precisely what I’ve had to do.

Does anyone have any performance tips for version 10? I have tried tweaking all settings in the Options, Preferences, Video and Preview Device tabs but they made no difference in performance whatsoever.

Once again, I find it disheartening that version 9 performs substantially better with the same files on the same computer with the same codecs.

    Thanks.

Yea, it does seem a little “new”. I can’t wait for the first patch either. My daughter is using my copy to do videos with her Kodak Zi8 and it’s driving her very crazy because the clips randomly turn black. The all she does to fix it is change the preview mode and they some back one by one. Very frustrating but it is a x.0 version so let’s hope they shake a lot of these problems out.

Just so you know… your CPU is kind of underpowered for AVCHD. You should have at least a 2.8Ghz and if it’s really an Intel Duo Core and not a Core 2 Duo that is even worse. But I understand that V9 ran better so your point is well taken. V10 needs some smoothing out.

Sorry…my bad. I meant core 2 duo but yea, I know I’m pushing it with my computer but have been trying to hold off buying a new one and the big jump to Win 7 as long as humanly possible. 🙂

It’s good to know that at least others are having crazy random problems also. Yes, I can’t complain too loudly buying an x.0 version. I hope they are working overtime to release the first major patch.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

I am also using version 10 of Platinum HD, after having had version 9 (SD).

I am also encountering problems regularly such as:

    – crashes when importing .MOV files directly from the EOS 7D (H264)
    – some red areas in preview from time to time (looks like bad memory handling, as restarting VEgas with the same project usually solves the problem)
    – in some cases, when rendering a project, some parts of it are rendered as black sequences — quite annoying to see this after hours of rendering…
    – DivX rendering does not work on my desktop.

Apart from these problems, and others I probably forget, I am rather a happy user of this version. But looking forward for fixes like you!!

Thanks so much. I also noticed that many of the problems involve odd colors and flashes in the preview window which then actually get rendered in the output file. My other major issue is impossibly slow speed when editing, but that could be due to my older computer (4 years), which handles ver 9 fine but is struggling with ver 10.

I think this certainly confirms it’s not my PC or configuration but some pretty severe bugs in this version. The good news I guess is that the new effects and plug-ins now show up in my version 9! At least that’s a “consolation prize” before they release the first patch.
