Dissappointed with Movie Studio 10 HD Platinum Producer
I installed version 10 this past weekend and while I’m thankful for some features and plug-ins that are very welcome, and thankful for the extra tracks, overall I’m disappointed. For me, on my WinXP Pro SP3, Intel Dual-Core 2.0 gHz CPU, 3.5 GB RAM computer, it runs AVCHD files so slowly that it is impossible to edit using the preview window. These files actually ran better in version 9! Furthermore, the program is “flaky” (that’s a technical term) and crashed 6 times inside of 8 hours when ver 9 never crashes. This is on the same computer using the same settings and the same codecs.
It especially seems to have problems with multiple tracks of video using the chroma key plug-in. At one point after adding a new chroma key track and using the Deform plug-in also, the preview window showed random color bars (distorted because of the Deform plug-in) at various frames of the video where the new track video should have showed up making it completely useless. I thought perhaps the problem was with the preview function but when I rendered the video, the odd color bars were there also.
Has anyone else had multiple problems with version 10?
I know they will fix these problems eventually and I also broke my own cardinal rule of never buying version X.0 of ANY software, but it’s still disappointing to have to revert back to using version 9, which is precisely what I’ve had to do.
Does anyone have any performance tips for version 10? I have tried tweaking all settings in the Options, Preferences, Video and Preview Device tabs but they made no difference in performance whatsoever.
Once again, I find it disheartening that version 9 performs substantially better with the same files on the same computer with the same codecs.

Each new version of software is going to put more strain on a computer.
While the requirements for your software say “1 GHz processor (multicore or multiprocessor recommended for HD)”, you need to look at the specs for Vegas Pro 10 which say “2 GHz processor (multicore or multiprocessor CPU recommended for HD or stereoscopic 3D)”.
I realize they they are two different pieces of software but, when I look at what you’re trying to do, anyone using your computer with Vegas Pro would be told to upgrade their CPU.
It’s a generally accepted fact that effective editing of AVCHD footage requires an i7 CPU and this is what you should be looking at upgrading to as your machine is, IMO, underpowered for what you’re expecting it to do. -
Thanks Mike. No question there is some truth to this. Even so, some of the issues are more “bug-like” and not related to just slow response. I’m able to edit some AVCHD videos fine so it’s a bit of a mystery. I’ll anxiously await their first major patch but as always, Sony gives very low priority to Vegas–at least the consumer Studio version that I have, and that’s always annoying.
