Editing over gigabit ethernet is just fine. We have delivered 5 stations doing dual stream from 1 server at DV data rates.

The problem is PPro. If you even have a common video clip in 2 different PPro projects, You can only open 1 project at a time, PPro reports that the file is in use and cannot open. This is a big problem. SAN systems can solve this, but are expensive and complicated. Here is a solution that I saw at NAB.

  • It should work just fine. The issues until to today have been getting all of the right drivers together in one place like Apple has just done. The Macs are really just PC’s with an EFI bios. The bios (booting) issue has been what has kept this from being done out of the gate.

[Aaron Strader] “At least until Adobe re-ports the Pro Suite to mac, as they’re rumored to.”

Don’t count on it. PPro is heavily dependant on DirectX. Especially now, why not just install XP? Adobe still has to get Intel universal binaries of the current apps. Then it will be fun to load AE on both partitions and get a real benchmark of operating system performance issues.

Do you have one of these Macs? Give it a try ! Let us know.

    Good luck,

You have all missed one of the best new features in 2.0.
You can now do a fill left/right in the track mixer.
Just setup track 1 to fill left and track 2 to fill right.
Then place the clip audio in the track that you want to use (or both).

    It really works well

Yes Peter, 1.5 TB should be fine for all of the new apps. The next hurdle comes at 4 TB, I have not had the ability to test this configuration.

Anyone out there with new Adobe Collection and over 4TB of storage?

    Let us know.

I have seen this many times before with Adobe apps.
Is your Striped set in the 2 TB range or larger?

If the answer is yes then you will have to partition the drives into 1.5 TB or smaller to write to them from some Adobe apps.

Photoshop 7 would not write to anything over 1TB

I wish that they would fix these issues.

    I forgot to answer this

[Herb Sevush] “Why is this any better than simply breaking the audio to mono in the bin, laying both audio tracks and video to the timeline, and then grouping them together.”

You are really creating a “fill right” and a “fill Left” track in Premiere speak. You just put the audio on the track that corresponds with the audio track that you want to hear. This way you don not have to do anything to the clips differently in the bin. I have found the “break clips” to be a pain for me.

[Herb Sevush] “I son’t see how your solution makes this as easy as it is on any other system I’ve ever worked with.”

I didn’t say that it was, It is just what I do. take it or leave it.

[Herb Sevush] “I can see the advantage in applying different filters or levels to the different tracks,”

This is exactly why I use it.

    Your Mileage may vary.

OK, Here is what I do -YES it is a workaround. It is a pretty powerful solution.
Situation – Lav mike on one channel (and I want to compress) and Nat sound that needs EQ and more level on the other.

    1. Every default Project contains 2 MONO submix tracks.
    2. On the Mixer – Track 1 is set for output to submix 1 (instead of Master)
    3. On the Mixer – Track 2 is set for output to submix 2 (instead of Master)
    4. On the Mixer – Track 1 Add Effect “Channel Volume” and on the pull down select

    Hi Guys,
The Audio issue decribed is not as bad as it seems. PPro’s audio is very powerful, like a real audio app. Without going into a tutorial on this, I would suggest learing how to use a MONO SUBMIX TRACK. The routing in PPro is very strong for a Video app. If you have anymore questions I will answer them.

This issue has come up before, it is not one of the problems I have with PPro. Now the mandatory audio conform, that is another issue. 🙂

    Thanks,
    Steve
