    Try effect>simulation>shatter.

    Are your images moving (or scaling) with motion blur on?
    Are you using Pixel Aspect Ratio correction? It softens things, so switch it off before rendering.

    Also, if the center of the image is not at an integer value, AE has to interpolate the pixels slightly, since the image pixels are placed “between” the comp pixels. This is unavoidable if you want to animate the image.

    Anybody else?

    Try searching the COW posts on “ink”. This question gets asked a lot these days.

    As is the case with all 3D effects in AE, the effect just creates a “live movie” that “plays” on a flat layer, which acts as a sort of movie screen. When you make the layer 3D, you’re just making the flat screen exist in 3D space, so if you want to flip the layer (screen) around, that’s cool, but the Shatter will still look like a movie playing on a screen.

    As for the Shatter using the Comp Camera, that’s a trick that makes the “movie” look as if it is respecting the Comp Camera. Does that make sense?

    Anyway, you need to make a 3D camera (if you haven’t already), then select “use comp camera” or such in the Shatter controls to make Shatter recognize the Comp Camera. Don’t make the Shatter layer 3D.

    Yep, AE assumes 30 fps for still sequences. Reinterpret the sequence and all will be well.

    Yep, PAR correction does muck it up.
    And having the image at a half-pixel position can muck it up … hmm …

    Can you show us a screengrab of the image info in the project window? Maybe it’s RAW or something, and should be a TIFF or PSD. Maybe.

    And maybe a new screengrab of the comp with PAR correction off.

    That is an unexpected result … for me at least. Probably not for Dan … 🙂

    Here’s my shot at it:

    s = thisComp.layer(“Null 1”).scale;
    extra=10;
    [s[0]+extra,s[1]+extra]

    Tying “extra” to a slider expression control would be niftier, but I’ll leave that to you. 🙂
