AE, natively, can only deal with flat planes. So you can only make boxes. Theoretically, you could make the Statue of Liberty out of teeny flat planes in AE, but they’d ship you off before you finished it.

There are some third-party (and bundled) effects that create 3D objects then effectively place those 3D objects on a flat layer in AE:
    1. CC Sphere and CC cylinder: make spheres and cylinders
    2. Zaxwerks Invigorator: makes extruded text, some objects and can import 3D objects into AE. Third-party.
    3. Conoa
    4. Boris

You may find each of those solutions limiting, or you may not. If you really want to do 3D, get a 3D app such as Cinema4D, which is good for motion graphics. The others may be too complex, or they may not.

You cannot bend anything in 3D in AE without a third-party plug such as Forge Freeform, or maybe Digital Anarchy’s 3D Layer. There may be others.

Sometimes I think we expect too much of AE. It’s not a complete motion graphics solution.

Try creating a new project, then importing the dodgy project. If it works, save under a new name, then do that again, under a new new name. Make saving under a new name a regular part of your workflow, maybe every hour or two.

Your error sounds like bad RAM. It could be that your project only accessed the bad RAM when the project got big enough — that’s why you notice the error now. Can you trade RAM with someone else?

October 31, 2005 at 2:50 am in reply to: Camera Question- Orient of Path? What does this mean?

“Orient to path” means “point the camera in the direction of whatever path along which it happens to be moving”.

That path could be a simple set of position keyframes. It could also be a path copied from illustrator, then pasted to a mask in AE, then pasted to the camera’s position property in AE.

This should be in the manual and help.

  • There was a plugin (Maya Paint Effects) but it is long obsolete, with a licensing scheme that would probably prevent using even old, dead copies. Unfortunately.

… because currently, DVD menus always have a delay when looping.

Assuming you’re talking about a DVD menu …?

You should be using the Vector Paint effect, which is only available in the Pro version of AE, if I recall. Those controls that you mention are in the Vector Paint effect’s controls palette. Hit F3 to reveal the controls palette for a layer that has had effects applied.

If you want the video to look identical to the original, it should not be put through AE. Since AE always renders every frame, it will recompress every frame, and every frame will look (at least) slightly different from the original.

This goes for RAM previews and final renders.

    Does that make sense?

    Ah, yes — correct.

Actually, regardless of the output, you never have to render fields. It’s an aesthetic choice, generally for the appearance of smoother motion, but I avoid it if possible. However, if you do render fields, you need to choose the correct field order for your hardware. DV is lower first, but some codecs (and hardware) are upper first.

[Naveen Mallikarjuna] “So, if you go into that particular template and change the fielding from “Off” to either Upper or Lower, I guess the RAM preview should now calculate with fielding in mind. Of course, if someone could give me a “Yes, that’s what will happen.” I’d really appreciate it so I know I’m on the right track.”

Sorry, no. You can only see fields on a TV monitor, not a computer monitor. To do that, you can hook up a camcorder or digital/analog converter to your Firewire output, then connect the camcorder/d-a to the TV. Check the AE help for more details.
