  • add scaling keyframe? (complete newb.. pls hlp)

Hello folks, l’ve only just gotten AE today so please excuse my newbish question here…
The reason l got after effects was to create looping “backgrounds” for dynamically based flash sites, and flash intros that l produce for my clients, and l’ve decided to utilize after effects to add a some healthy new effects to my creations. In any event, l’m trying to follow along with the tutorials listed, this one in particular:
    &page=/articles/velez_dean/DNA_bkg/index.html” target=”_blank”>https://www.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/page_wrapper.cgi?forumid=&page=/articles/velez_dean/DNA_bkg/index.html
and everything is going relatively smoothly, however when Dean says:

    9. Set a scale keyframe at the beginning of every layer

in step 9 of the tutorial, and then again in step 10:

    10. Select the DNA 1 layer, set a scale keyframe at the OUT 225×225

    and once more..

Select the DNA 1 layer, set a rotation keyframe IN 50 OUT -50

I can’t seem to figure out how to add these scale/rotate keyframes… I’m running AE 6.5. If anyone would be willing to help me out with a little push l’d greatly applicate it 😀

Thank you for all you’ve done, and running such a great community here!

Not to be rude, but have you read the manual?

heh, no that’s not a rude question. To be honest l do not have a manual. I did however check the “help index” that’s built into the software and l could not find any information. I also googled for an answer on setting, and placing keyframes and l was unable to locate an answer that way, so l did the next best thing, and posted here.

    Thanks for the reply!

Go to the TimeLine Window, select layer you are trying to manipulate, click the twirly(a triangle left of the layer name) this will bring transform properties, click on the transform twirly, this will open up different properties. Now select whatever property you are trying to animate. (Make sure you are at 0 seconds in timeline) The circle looking things that are next to the properties is how you animate, By default they are in global mode meaning the variable doesn’t change. Click on it and it will turn into a stopwatch. You have just set a key frame, adjust to whatever value you want to adjust. Next drag your timeline to the end of the animation, you can use mouse or the end key. Now adjust the value to whatever you want the out value to be. Important don’t click on the stopwatch again, this will make it a global property. Just adjust the value.
Here is some shortcuts: When in timeline select just the layer and press:
    s-solo’s scale value
    r-Rotation
    t-opacity
    p-position
    a-anchor point
Also buy a book if you can, once you learn the basics I would recommend Creating Motion Graphics with AE by Trish&Chris Meyer, it is a kick ass book. If you have money to burn checkout some Total Training Fundamental videos, they are very good but pricey 🙁
I hope that helps, Good Luck

Excellent thank you for the information, and the suggetion on the book is exactly what l needed. As’a matter’o fact that was going to be my next question. Heh. As far as the discs, l don’t think l’ll be able to purchse them, as l’m using AE for such a small task in only 10% of my overall projects. But thanks again for the help! 😀
