Just had to do the ole reformat reinstall process and am now noticing something very strange in AE. It might have been there before, but I’m just noticing it now with the footage I’m using, anyway it’s strange.

I have some images from Photoshop that I created, 648X486 but they have some nice fine details in them (metal scratches etc) look really nice and crisp. When viewing the images in Photoshop, or windows when saved as .bmp/.tga they look perfect.

When I import them into AE they lose a lot of the crispness and detail, it looks like they are being “softened” or blurred slightly by AE. This is with the best switch set for the layer. If I turn off the best switch and put it into draft mode it looks perfect. The problem is if I have to nest the layer in comps (which I do) and then use draft mode, it appears insanely jagged and pixelated. TUrning to best blurs it again.

I’ve never noticed this before, but I’m wondering if its always been there and I am just now noticing it because of the crispness of detail in these particular images.

Anyone have any ideas or insight?

Are your images moving (or scaling) with motion blur on?
Are you using Pixel Aspect Ratio correction? It softens things, so switch it off before rendering.

Also, if the center of the image is not at an integer value, AE has to interpolate the pixels slightly, since the image pixels are placed “between” the comp pixels. This is unavoidable if you want to animate the image.

    Anybody else?

I first started noticing this when I had to use type that was created in Photoshop. I guess the hard edges and finer details draws more attention to it. It is definitely new to AE 6.5, since I used to create all my type this way and never had this softening problem in prev versions. Now I use Illustrator or create in AE because there’s no work around.

Thanks for replies guys. Steve, I am just dragging the image straight into the comp and seeing the issue. The image is 648X486 square from CS2 and being drug into a 648X486 comp. No keyframes, scaling, PAR.

Looks like CHarlie is having the same issue I am, maybe its time to pull out the AE 6.0 discs and reinstall for this project 🙁
