I didn’t do the tutorial itself, that was Tim Wilson. But the materials he uses in it for the BorisFX segment are from me. I don’t have any tutorials myself, but here’s a movie that shows off a little more of what I gave to him:

The result of all this was for Avid to give me a copy of Avid3D to play around with and develop similar materials, but I just haven’t had time to get into it with all of our new OSN stuff this season. If you’re lurking Tim, I swear I’ll get on that software soon!

Most of the materials right now on the AvidFX demo (the basketball court and the text extrusion/ring) are my creations. Did you like them?

That’s a good question. It’s always been my opinion that Avid bought Pinnacle for access to some of Liquid’s editing technology – I figured it and other things would migrate upwards to the Xpress/Media Composer lines rather than downward, but who knows?

Use Boris Blue? Real 3D needs a real 3D app.

Whoops. Forgot about make alpha. Interesting they’d allow that for an email addy, but then again why not? I’d update my profile here but Creative Cow’s no longer allowing screen names shorter than 6 characters and I’m not going to give mine up yet.

I think it would be base layer is your footage, the wipe matte sits on top of that, or rather it is what you’d put in the mask track of each of the video sources with one of them inverted. The matte for the sword (I assume the sword itself doesn’t have a key signal?) on top of that (or dump the video tracks into a container and put the sword matte into container’s mask track) the sparks on top of that and the sword itself sitting on top of everything?

I don’t doubt it, but these are the tools we have…

Yeah, that’s what I figured. I’m asking this on behalf of someone who’s used to doing it in a Quantel Editbox, which allowed you to draw a new matte for each frame and then “bank” them all together so as to provide an animation.
