All I can say is that I used RED on a FCP timeline once and while everything appeared to work fine, the next time I attempted to open the FCP project file it refused. I was able to open an older pre-RED backup from the vault, but working through and reapplying the same plug resulted in the same corruption. From that point on I gave up on using RED as a timeline plugin as I can’t afford that kind of time loss and there’s nobody here that can diagnose what’s going on. From that point on, I’ve never had that kind of problem so I think it’s more than a coincidence.

Yep, I like to have stuff rendered out so I can use them in future projects. So far I’ve had some bad luck with using Red on the timeline resulting in corrupted projects, so I tend to avoid it.

    Hi Jon,

Yes, it’s standalone with the resulting file going into FCP 7 on 10.6.8. All tracks and map layers are off. I tried changing the alpha option from straight to precomp black on the export menu, but it always seems to come out as straight, at least according to FCP. Or, it reverts to straight once the render is complete, but I doubt that’s it. FCP composite modes make no difference. You can partially get there with Screen, but there’s a video level “bump” for the duration of the clip when it’s placed over another track of video. Just surprised to not see the good old checkerboard for this effect.

  • Not to be a grinch here, but shouldn’t you be able to do this using stock Media 100 effects? I’ve never cut on one, but if it’s anywhere close to an Avid, a splitscreen can be achieved in mere seconds.

In the channels tab I have RGB, R, G, B and Alpha. It defaults to the alpha being off. When I turn it on the black background then turns red. If you haven’t guessed I’m not a Photoshop user. In my dumb universe, checkerboard should represent transparency period.

Interesting that your two image sizes are different. What is the comp size of the FX project versus your Avid project? Are you importing these graphics back into Avid using Resize or Maintain? Do you have 1:2:1 Deflicker on or off?

Probably need a little more detail all around. System specs and a definition of “terrible” might help.

Sounds like something more suited for RED and its particle effects generators.

This has been a major gripe for years and years. I wouldn’t hold your breath.

The quickest way is to check the “Make Backdrop Track” box in the Backdrop tab of your Text control window. From there, fiddle around with the controls or go to the newly created backdrop track nested inside your text track on the timeline and mess around with the associated Shape/Fill/Border/Shadow controls.

For more control, you could instead create individual color and/or spline tracks and adjust them to your tastes and needs. There are several pre-made text backdrops in the Keyframe Library, assuming you’ve already rendered out the thumbnails.
