text exploding into daiseys
Posted by Tim Bowen on November 27, 2006 at 1:13 amHi Folks,
I’m using After Effects 7 with BCC 4 installed and trying to make the word “Wildflower” explode into multiple daisey flowers. I’ve tried using BCC Image Shatter, but not really getting it to work. The daisey image replaces the text even before the explosion (shatter) takes place. Any advice on making this happen? Or am I going about this all wrong?
Thanks,

November 27, 2006 at 6:38 pmYou can bypass the problem by duplicating the text layer and placing it above the layer with the filter effect, then remove the filter effect from the duplicated layer and animating the opacity of the unfiltered layer over a couple of frames to allow the filtered effect to come through while maintaining the unfiltered text at the start of the effect.
I hope this helps.
Peter.

December 5, 2006 at 10:24 pmHi Pete,
sorry for the delay in responding. I’ve been trying several things. The BCC 3D Image shatter allows you to have “rectangles” (and other shapes) to burst apart from the text… but when you choose custom shape, the custom shape replaces all the text. So then there’s no text left! Quite annoying….The only thing I don’t like about your suggestion is that I want the shatter particles to come FROM the text breaking apart into daiseys. Changing the opacity, just looks like it switches quickly from word to a bunch of daiseys…..
Still looking for other suggestions… Maybe I’m still out to lunch on approaching this correctly???
Thanks guys -

I’ve got a solution that I think should work for you.
After you set up the explosion with the Daisy image, follow these instructions:

December 12, 2006 at 6:29 pmPeter,
thanks for the tip. I used a layer with the shatter effect on the text. This fades up so the “rectangle” shatter starts to tear the word apart. I’m then fading in and scaling up (not from zero though) another layer with the shatter effect using the custom daisey flower shape. I also added a shatter effect on the text “blue” glow, using the custom daisey shape reading the alpha channel. There are some other parameter adjustments I made in the options menu, but I don’t remember at the moment. I used Boris’ BCC4 plug in for After Effects; 3D Image Shatter to create this.
I’m putting it on my reel at http://www.timbowen.com if you want to see the finished product. It should be up today December 12. If I tweak it at all, it will be to have more of the tear happening right before the explosion. -

December 12, 2006 at 6:40 pmHI Tim,
I’m glad that worked for you. Sometimes a couple of the more complex filters in the BCC set can be a little unwieldily, especially when you’re not using them every day.
I checked out your reel by the way – very nice work. Thanks for sharing that.
Cheers,
Peter.

December 13, 2006 at 3:26 amHey Pete,
I noticed that you responded pretty quickly to my post this morning. I don’t think I had the “Wildflower Exploding into daisies” thing on the web at that time… well anyway, it’s there now, so if you got to see it Great!… thanks for the compliment on the reel. If you have any other thoughts on the reel as a whole, let me know. I’m always trying to make it better as I look for work in off times.
Thanks
-Tim
