As stated above, the M2T files play just fine in Bridge. On my system, they don’t preview properly in the bin, but the Preview window works OK.
I have tried a couple of different HDV cameras with OnLocation on two different laptops. The slower laptop was not even close to realtime. but the other only displayed a slight delay.
Perhaps you need to provide the exact setup and steps you are taking.

You should be able to capture from tape and write back to tape. Use a standatd HDV preset unless you are using 24f in which case you need to download some new presets.
It should not crash your PC.
Your PC is pretty darn weak for HV but it can be done if you like to take long naps while things happen.
The upgrade is nice but not mandatory.

I don’t think so, but you really don’t want to change the defaults anyway. The capture and scratch disks, yes. But not little files like preferences.

Looks like I missed one.
The “M” key is the shortcut for the Track Select tool. The new shortcut is “A”. Change it back if you wish.

Or, use a DVD ripper.
Premiere Pro 2.0 is a lot friendlier to MPEG video than 1.5 was.
(Keep in mind that free trials don’t handle MPEG at all.)

Are you capturing with Scene Detect using Cineform HDLink or the free HDVSplit?
Capturing over start and stop points has been known to cause slippage due to broken GOPs.

It is a very old program and it is difficult to help you. I suggest upgrading to the latest version (CS3).

Some people prefer adding the logo to a title and then they use that as an overlay after everything else is done being edited so it doesn’t slow things down during the editing process.
