I haven’t moved to the tablet yet (though probably will soon), but two things have helped me:

An XML file does contain data. It doesn’t embed media files, but it points to them if parsed correctly.

You can export a 23.98 EDL, and convert it to 29.97 using Cinema Tools. I’m not at my computer to give you the exact instructions on how to do that, but it is a feature.

For example, the title has “afternoon” as part of the text. I opened the XML in a text editor, and searched on “afternoon”.

The text was enclosed is a tag such as this:

str Text
Afternoon

So the string connected with this title is Afternoon. Right below that, tne next parameter was fontname.

fontname Font
Lucida Grande So if I want to change this to helvetica, I’ll just copy this whole parameter and paste it in what to search “for”.

Then I’ll paste it again in what to replace “with”. I’ll change the Lucida Grande to Helvetica.

And I’ll continue with any other parameters I wish to change.

There’s also the option of using fast user switching, and doing email as a different user.

Even if you get a virus, you are only vulnerable up to the level of that user’s authority.

So set up an email user account without admin, restrict it’s disc access, and even if a virus hits, you’re logged on as a different user and nothing important will be impacted.

Most people cruise the internet as admin level of security, and that’s asking for trouble.

Final Cut 5.1.2 was the first to support HDV native, I believe. Do you have at least that version of FCP5?

If you can’t recapture, there is a tool that will take timecode from an Avid ALE file, and place that timecode to Quicktime files (which are named identically to their names in the ALE).

This is part of Sebsky tools, and I used it a few years ago. It’s called batch add timecode.

If you zoom in on the subframe, move the indicator around, and set an in mark, the audio shifts.

I’ve used this in Final Cut 6 when syncing a motion picture telecine with direct to hard drive sound.
