Why don’t you drag the tab out of the canvas window, to have two separate window. The second one doesn’t say “canvas” but it works the same.

If you open two sequences, you then have two tabs in the canvas, and two tabs in the timeline. If you drag one of the timeline tabs to the other window, then drag the corresponding canvas tab to the other window, then you can work on one timeline/canvas combination in one window, and the other timeline/canvas combination in the other window.
Is this what you’re talking about?

If the sound is still slightly odd when lined up, check in the the Final Cut help under “subfame editing” to get even closer.

If the system isn’t doing exactly what you want, you could get up to speed on a little elementary Applescript or Automator and automate the actions at the finder level.

They might have 8 tracks of production sound. They merge that all to 2 tracks, sync those 2 tracks to their telecined video, and edit with 2 tracks of audio.
Then in audio post, they want to pull in all 8 tracks for every shot.
I’ve worked with 4 tracks of production sound, but I cut them all in for every shot, so they were instantly available to sound post via OMF.
I guess these folks have too many tracks to edit with the originals.
