The resolution was upgrade the MacOS media server to 10.9 Mav and use the new SMB2. Works nicely now! Thanks for the tips and advise!!

Not sure why that is happening, but as a work around, perhaps place the 2nd clip on track two with overlay on the end of the 1st clip and ramp up the opacity from 0 to 100.

    Walter and Kevin,

Thanks so much for your response. Yes, we are working with an engineer (well know and respected) but most of his experience has been in working with Macs.

A little over a year ago when we made the hard switch to CS6 from FCP7, we thought we’d build a Win7 workstation as a test to see how we liked it. Overall, it worked quite well when it had local storage.

A few weeks ago we decided to pull the trigger to have the engineer build the same shared storage system that he’s installed for numerous facilities. Everything is well with all the Mac workstations, but the Win7 is having the issues I outlined below.

Also Kevin, I may have given you the impression that we’re sharing projects. We are not. We are only sharing the media. Projects are integrated by importing timelines as you outlined in your post and it works nicely. The issue we are having is that the Win7 has “difficulty” connecting to the server – but ONLY within Adobe apps (like PP, PS & AE). It connects just fine through Windows Explorer and other non-adobe apps.

I suspect it has something to do with the dynamic link server (or whatever Adobe calls it). For example, even on a mac, if I use the media browser to navigate to a new folder (to import or re-link footage for example), at the moment I open a folder to reveal items inside, there is a slight hesitation and sometimes a spinning beach ball for a few seconds before it opens the folder.

That’s what is happening on the Win7 machine. Except that it can take as long as 3 or minutes before it opens. Sometimes it never opens. Once it opens however and you successfully import or relink the media, it works dandy. You can even close the project, shut down the computer and when you re-open the session, it works perfect.

However, if you try to navigate to a new folder, you’re back to square one. It takes forever to connect (if at all) and if you bail out and don’t let it finish connecting, the media in the previous folder that had worked perfectly, is also stuttered and skipping frames. Very odd…

I’ll check out the white paper you mentioned and share with our engineer to see if that offers any insight.

I guess if we can’t make it work, we’ll have considered the Windows experiment a bust and simply replace it with another Mac 🙁

Not athletes, but corporate clients who ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY INSIST that for the promotional video be realistic, that we must use real employees. “You see, they really understand the material,” they tell me!

“Yea… that always works – what a great idea Mr/Ms client,” said not one single producer… ever!

    Rich,

I know your question was directed to Walter, but I can chime in as we face this issue all the time. For repeat clients that we have a good relationship, we’ll work within their payment terms.

From a cash-flow perspective, we simply build in the cost of tying up capital into the project. I don’t like it, but it’s a reality for me. I’d be curious to see how others (like Walter) handle these kind of long term relationship client.

But all of this based on the premise that you TRUST the client to eventually pay you! For those that have been in business for a while, you’ve developed a “sixth sense” about which clients are likely going to be problems right from the first phone call. You the ones… they’re “overly” friendly and complimentary of your work when they don’t really know much about you yet. They talk about how much work they’ve got for you… yada yada yada…

Bottom line: If we don’t have a (good) history with them, we require payment before delivery. We rarely deviate from that position.

One other thought is that for larger projects that may go on for many weeks or even months, we’ll discuss and agree from the get-go on a schedule of progress invoices at certain benchmarks. For example: upon script approval and pre-pro, completion of principal photography, completed draft edit before grading/audio post and final deliverable. That helps you cover your bills with crew, equipments, etc… and gets you out of the “production financing” business.

  • A few thoughts…

    1) Yes, an external drive would be helpful, but based on your description, I doubt it’s the main source of your problem.

    2) When you play back the media, are you doing so from the source window or the timeline sequence? If from the timeline, make sure that the sequence settings match the video clip. The easiest way to do this is to create a new sequence (don’t worry about the setting for now) and drag the clip onto it. When you do so, Premiere should give you a warning that the sequence doesn’t match the clip and it will offer to change the sequence to match the clip. Click yes.

FYI: If there’s already another video clip on the timeline, it will not give you that notice/warning. Because Premiere allows you to have different formats/frame rates/etc on a timeline, it assumes that you know what sequence setting you want and will not offer to switch every time you add a new/different clip format.

There are several other possibilities, but I’d start there…

    cheers!

  • Hi Patrick,

Thank for the reply! Do you know if BMD has updated the firmware to allow the DISP button to work yet?

I’ve been reading that the function is (was?) disabled…

    Thanks,
    Steve

August 19, 2013 at 3:57 pm in reply to: Really strange error in Premiere CC?

    Thanks Walter!

Vimeo (and everything else!) seems fine. It’s just that one 480p YouTube preset. And you’re right, I simply used the 720 preset and modified the settings to be equal to the 480 setting and it worked fine. Really odd!!

As for customs… I agree. I’ve been “threatening” to set aside some time to create a group of pre-sets for all my typical outputs and setting up watch folders. Now, if I could only get 28 hours out of each day…. hmmmm….
