Can two separate events share a keyword collection?

I have started a new event for material generated in 2012 for a project.
I now find that I have new keyword collections for this event.

Can I produce a smart collection across the 2011 and 2012 events?

Also at Christmas I created an event on my internal drive and linked ( not copied) files to it from my external camera archive drive.

When I returned home I wanted to move this event to my external fast RAID for editing.
I wanted to keep the files linked at this stage for the first cut.
My preferences were set to link NOT move media, nor transcode.

However when moving the event from within FCX all of the media was copied (and duplicated) to my RAID, the files were no longer linked!

The same happens if linked media goes offline, dragging the files back into FCX from the archive does not re-link the files but imports all of the media into the event folder.

Is media amazement really such a mess in FCX

Yes you can get AVID to consolidate any of its sequences with selectable handles to any of your media drives.

You can auto generate a new sequence referenced to these new clips generated or link your existing sequence to them.

Because of time pressures I often edit the rushes directly with AMA. After transmission I then consolidate just the parts of the clips used, so that I have a card independent sequence.
(Of course an archive should be made of the whole card at some stage, you can also transcode the clips into an avid codec))

The problem I have is that when I move an event any linked (not copied when imported) is now copied to the new drive and is now not indexed but the media is now stored in the event
If I wish to make any linked media online again as described above it also fully copied despite the preferences telling it not to
Over Christmas I did not have access to my raid just my archive drive when I moved the event to the raid from internal all of the media was copied from the archive to the raid not what I wanted

I use this cheaper sonnet card on a 17″mbp and it works fine ( you need the latest drivers from the sonnet site for Lion).

However I am not convinced that he actual speed is much different to connecting my AVIO Raid5 directly by Firewire ( with no other FW devices on bus) may be an express34 thing?

I know they have got mixed reviews on here but I use a Drobo pro for raided archive, you can add more drives (up to 8) as and when required.

If you are really short of disk space or have a large shooting ratio, what I have done in the past is to rough cut the required footage with H264 (slow and often like editing in treacle)

Then consolidate and transcode just the required material for fine editing.

Or even better transcode all and edit in PRORES then consolidate and keep just the PRORES required.
Obviously keep your H264 as your camera archive.

Often what works well if it is for a graphic with details of the person etc.
Is to select and possible zoom to your required frame in FCP ( zooming to leave room for graphics etc.)

Then export that frame ( mark in and out on same frame then export as Tiff act, don’t used a compressed format such as jpg)

Bing into PS AE or anything you like then do as described above to get a cut out of your foreground figure.
It then put this on V2 above the original freeze background ( or any other you wish).
A slow move out of V2 above your background together with a slight move on the added graphics often works well.

This is how the 3D effect on old photos is achieved.
You can separate the foreground people from the background in AE then put each person, any cut out objects etc on the background in a 3D space.Then move the camera for the required “3d effect”. ( clone/paint the background if you area moving too far and run out of background)

The time code generator does start from zero when added to each clip. (note you do need to set the frame rate manually it doesn’t automatically pick up the source frame rate)

To read and display in vision (BITC) the original code of each clip you need to add a time code reader effect to each segment.

if you want the timeline timecode of your sequence displayed in vision you need to drop your sequence into a new sequence and add the effect to that.
(You can also add a generator effect to the whole new sequence if that what is what you want.)

Double clicking on this new sequence opens the original sequence for modification.
If you want to change any of the top level effects added to the final sequence, cntrl-click and select “open in viewer”

When you do a voice over the audio media is stored in the machines ram until you hit stop when it is moved onto your media disk.
With a long timeline fcp allocates enough memory for the whole timeline (it assumes you are going to voice over in one go!) If you do not have enough memory it gives the above error.

Just put an out on the timeline some where downstream and hope your talent needs to stop before it!
