  • Can FCPX trim media files when duplicating a project?

Posted by Steve Ascher on January 24, 2012 at 6:09 pm

If you select the third option in the Duplicate Project screen (Duplicate Project and Used Clips only) does FCPX duplicate entire master clips, or is it capable of trimming the media files to the usually shortened length of the clips actually used in the project.

Since there’s no option for handles, i’m guessing there’s no trimming.

    Thanks for your help

It doesn’t trim any clips, just removes footage not actually used in the Project.

Thanks, Noah. Just wanted to confirm: when consolidating a sequence in Avid or Premiere, the system can shorten source media files, right? For example if you shot with a file-based camera, it can make shorter media files after consolidation?

Obviously, with tape-based projects all of those NLEs can shorten clips for batch re-capture from tape. But can they make shorter media files from file-based footage?

Yes you can get AVID to consolidate any of its sequences with selectable handles to any of your media drives.

You can auto generate a new sequence referenced to these new clips generated or link your existing sequence to them.

Because of time pressures I often edit the rushes directly with AMA. After transmission I then consolidate just the parts of the clips used, so that I have a card independent sequence.
(Of course an archive should be made of the whole card at some stage, you can also transcode the clips into an avid codec))
