  • Did I stumble onto something like “reconnect media” in X?

I’ve mentioned my workflow here before. I shoot DSLR, then in the field use Disk Utility to make Disk Images of the cards as they fill up and then backup those archives.

Tonight I had a client call for a re-cut on some work from a few months ago – and I noticed that back then, I wasn’t using the proper “MOVE” command and had managed to get all of the clips in a particular event and project disconnected (all of them were showing as red (offline) Icons.

I figured I was going to have to re-import all the clips from scratch. Thankfully, I didn’t delete them from the Event Browser, but rather just selected one exemplar clip in the IMPORT screen.

To my surprise, after telling me that the thumbnail (THM) files were missing – X politely relinked to all that cards files and repopulated my timeline and the Event Browser just as “RELINK MEDIA” had done in Legacy.

I was able to “reconnect” to five cards worth of data in about a minute and was right back like I’d never lost a beat.

Is “re-import” functionally in X the same as “reconnect media” in Legacy?

All my disk images are on a firewire drive, and if this proves to be accurate (and it seems to be working for me now) – then as we’ve seen in other cases “reconnect media” is not actually missing, but rather re-named (and possibly limited in ways I don’t yet realize) in X.

In any case, not having to re-build anything to take care of this client request – even tho I messed up and moved the files manually – is making me feel pretty good right now.

If everyone else knew this and I’m late to the party – sorry to waste your time. But I’d thought that the entire “reconnect media” thing was gone. And perhaps it isn’t.

    FWIW.

If you have files that went offline and you then try to re-import the identical, original media back into the same Event, (and FCP X decides they match), they will reconnect. You can do this either via File>Import or simply by dragging directly into the Event from the Finder.

I’d agree with you Bill. It’s more of a change in terminology and methodology that comes with FCPX. I’m discovering new and wonderful things with the “Modify Event References” in the last 24 hrs that have gone a long way in restoring my belief that someone somewhere was thinking of mere mortals like myself.

No one seems the least bit irritated that little of the functionality of FCPX seems undocumented? Or is that the joy of Apple… the discovery?

    As Noah said:

    … (and FCP X decides they match)…

I still haven’t figured out when and why.

    What about transcoded ProRes files?
So there is no relink but more a reimport function.
Still like a right click on the clip for a relink option.

But this seems another way… I guess.

Was this brought in as “import from camera”? If so, I believe that works much like Log & Transfer in Legacy. L&T allowed a sort of batch import and it’s likely that’s what you are seeing.

The problem I have is that when I move an event any linked (not copied when imported) is now copied to the new drive and is now not indexed but the media is now stored in the event
If I wish to make any linked media online again as described above it also fully copied despite the preferences telling it not to
Over Christmas I did not have access to my raid just my archive drive when I moved the event to the raid from internal all of the media was copied from the archive to the raid not what I wanted

    I had a nightmare last night where i have done the following;

FCPX to OMF with the free duck, once created wouldn’t open in Soundtrack so went lets try Audition, no luck either …. went back into FCPX and my External Audio files were offline, he is me thinking – oh shared programs – nope files would not reconnect for anything – – Dup Projects, Nope, Modify , Nope Swearing nope ! re-import – nope (get the picture)

After HOURS of abuse and a good part of a bottle of red wine i admitted defeat and went to bed.

I tried again this morning – nothing, so I went outside the box ……

Exported a XML, then reimported it back in – BOOM media relinked !!! I deleted the project i imported in from the xml and all is good again

Hope this works for everyone else cause that was a horrible night !

Also I have to say the Xto7 app is amazing – best investment ever – as i managed to get my files to STB via FCPX -> xto7 -> send to Soundtrack – worked a charm
