You can get both of both worlds by using an Intel Mac! Mac OS and Windows OS all in one machine.

Tapes were recorded from what camcorder? Canon, Sony, Panasonic, JVC. DV or DVCAM. Brand of Tape. Camera was set to 16 Bit 48khz or 32 bit 12mhz. Need more information.

If you are using the card just to output to a second monitor, you are better off using the second port on your graphics card. The display output on the RTMac was/is only 640×480 (great for the blind)

FLV is for your video clips with audio. SWF is for stills

You said the magic word Walter, Kona 3. Without an HD capture card, HDV could take some time to conform depending how long your clips are and what your system configuation is.

HDV is a less expensive aquisition option but you will still need other hardware options to make it perform.

I see a lot of people shooting HDV and when they get back to the edit suite, they are having a hell of a time trying to edit. You can edit with HDV, you just need to go through the correct steps to make it work efficiently.
