For HD do 1920 x 1080. When a clip at 1440 ends up in FCP it will turn into 1920. It kind of like the same idea behind Anamorphic. Best of luck.

Or just have your water fall and the clip of the persons face and then do a Stencial luma blend

You could print out the vector in a similar green as the background so you can trace it and still be able to key it out.

I would shoot your hand in front of a green screen drawing the vector art. Then I would key out the green and bring in the vector art and animated it. To animate the art on use a luma matte. I have not watched these tutorials but I think they should point you in the right direction for the write on look:

Very cool and very quick. I would check out the Hue/Saturation filter. You can adjust the Master Hue to change the color of the text. If you create an animated shape or shapes that are white you can do a Luma blend mode so only the text shows threw the shape. Something like that should get you pointed in the right direction.
