  • How to show a real hand drawing some vector graphics

    Hello everyone,

as usual, I apologize in advance if this has been asked already, but I just could not find it.

For my next project I need to mix video footage and vector animation.
Basically I am asked to show my hand drawing a bunch of characters/objects, which are then going to be animated.
My doubt is: what’s the best way to show that the real hand is drawing vector characters?

I was thinking of the following steps:

1 – draw and print a vector character on paper

2 – rotoscope my hand and pen that are moving along the printed character boundaries

3 – Add the rotoscoped hand/pen over the “virtual” vector character which I will animate with the stroke in order to simulate it’s beeing drawn in real time.

Does anybody out there know if there’s a better/cleverer way to do this?

Thank you very much for reading! 🙂

    Già

I would shoot your hand in front of a green screen drawing the vector art. Then I would key out the green and bring in the vector art and animated it. To animate the art on use a luma matte. I have not watched these tutorials but I think they should point you in the right direction for the write on look:

Thanks very much for the quick reply Stephen.

Let me try to explain my issue a little better:

My doubt is not really on how to animate the “growing line” of the drawing, but how to have the “real life” pen to follow the correct line; I can rotoscope/key out the hand with no problems, but I can’t be sure that my pen is following the exact shape of the drawing because I am pointing it on a white shape/green surface.

    Thanks again 🙂

You could print out the vector in a similar green as the background so you can trace it and still be able to key it out.
