From your project description, RAID sounds like the better solution. The 8-bay drive enclosure you linked looks pretty good. You still need the external docking station to copy the data from the client’s drives to the RAID, but then you set aside the original data as a backup. So the combination of RAID and the external dock gives you both large storage capacity and swappable drives.
You need to understand that on a RAID array, your data is spread across all of the disks in the array, and in the case of RAID 5, a single drive is the parity bit for everything in the RAID array. You can’t just “pull out a drive”. First, there is no PC readable data on that drive. If you drop that drive into a docking station on a PC, Windows will insist on reformatting it. You can if the enclosure supports JBOD, but in an 8-bay enclosure, JBOD will look to the PC as eight separate disk drives. For example, E;, F:, G:, H:, I:, J: K:, and L:. Potentially 25Tb of storage. Yes, you can mix them any way you want and each disk is readable by itself on the PC. But managing eight drive letters is a nightmare. (Been there). Eight 3Tb drives in a RAID 5 configuration (depending on the hardware configuration) will give you about 20Tb of storage, but it looks to the PC like a single 20Tb drive. It would be much easier to manage the project data on a single drive. The beauty of RAID is that you don’t have to start with eight drives. Start with three and your storage bucket can hold about 6Tb in RAID5. When need more space, plug in a fourth drive then go watch a double-feature while the RAID assimilates the new drive. The drive controller spreads the existing data that is on two drives plus parity over three drives plus parity. It will take a few hours, which is why you can’t treat the RAID array as a JBOD. But you can use the drive while data is being Borged. If the 8-bay will allow you to specify a standby drive then if a failed disk is detected, then it swaps in the standby drive and begins rebuilding the data.
It’s been years since I used RAID, so I would appreciate you keeping us up to speed on what you do.

There’s usually at least two ways to do anything in Vegas. Splitting events probably has ten methods, and I think that you selected the most difficult one.
I can’t tell from your message if you are editing on the timeline or the trimmer. I don’t use the trimmer because it adds extra steps but it’s there for people who learned editing on a primitive preview-based system. I do all my editing on the timeline but I can’t recall anytime in the past ten years that I’ve used the in/out method. It just seems to be more work than necessary. Move the cursor to the “in” point of the event and hit S and delete the unwanted part. Move the cursor to the “out” point and hit S and delete the unwanted part. Or create a region between your “in” and “out” points and hit S and the event is split at start and end of the region on the selected track. (If no track is selected then all events are split). Then you can delete the unwanted parts. Or if the event is short enough, you can just drag the start to the “In” point and the end to the “out” point.

Your .mov render is probably uncompressed, so the large filesize is no surprise.
If you are uploading to YouTube, they prefer an AVC/MP4 file.

I am doubtful that memory is the problem, but it certainly can’t hurt to run memtest anyway. Memtest does test every memory cell with just about every possible combination of bit patterns. The program moves itself to other areas of RAM so that it can test the RAM where it was formerly located.

You can’t easily “swap out” hard drives in a RAID system. Well, you can, but the RAID controller assumes the new drive replaces a bad one and it rebuilds the volume from the data contained in all the other drives. And it can take several hours.
Software-based RAID sucks.
Look at the Sans Digital 5-Bay eSATA RAID units.

Steve’s solution is the best. I do lower-thirds all the time and I only have to “create” the graphics and motion once.

I doubt that the external drives have anything to do with the problem. As the OP suggested, there’s something in the system that Vegas doesn’t like.
By the way, 80 processes in the background is not at all unusual. My office PC is running over a hundred. All operating systems have background processes running but Windows has more. Many programs, especially those from Microsoft, such as MS Office, Explorer, etc, pre-load into RAM so that they start faster than the competition. And by being pre-loaded, the processes those programs need are also running. I do not have Photoshop, MS Office or Explorer on my editing PC, nor do I have it running eMail. I occasionally use Chrome to download updates to Vegas or other Vegas support programs. (Chrome is a memory hog, too).
I keep asking if the PC or graphics card are overclocked because your symptoms sure sound to me like an overclocked PC hitting the wall.
Bad memory is a possibility, but that usually crashes the computer – not a single program. But you can run Memtest overnight to stress all of your RAM.
