Oh, so many things to comment on.

If you let DVDA recompress your video, you will compromise quality.
VBR *can* increase the bitrate budget for fast action scenes, but for projects with little motion, such as a play or talking head, you won’t see the difference.
I have been using the Videotagger credits roll generator for many years. Here’s an example: Credits Roll
I really like Videotagger (from Electric Happiness) because I source it with an Excel spreadsheet file, set my text parameters then generate an AVI file that I add to the Vegas timeline. No keyframes, no pan/crop, etc, and it only takes a few minutes from XLS to AVI.

Thanks guys, that’s what I’ve done. Perhaps the next version of DVDA will offer built-in image/text rotation

I doubt it. DVDA is not an editor. Any attempts to make it into an editor will just screw up its base functions.

I use a laptop

Rendering is processor intensive, and as you heat up the processor, the laptop will throttle the clock slower to cool it off. Depending on the processor, it may park some cores.

Try running the free program – coretemp – to monitor your CPU temperature and determine if the slowdown correlates to the heat buildup.

Holy Crap – you’re on to something.

I’ve been gone for a few weeks and had not downloaded 770. I was running 563. I downloaded 770 and tried your file again and yes, I crashed whenever I tried doing some editing. And the preview rate went to Hades as well. I am going back to 563.

OK, I reinstalled build 563 and again, I had no problems with your file. Preview is smooth and edits work just fine. Before deleting 770 I tried opening one of my older projects. I had no problems editing, but the preview was remarkably slow. Back to 563 and it was just fine.

Go to the Sony support site and send them your file and findings. Also, download and install 563 and try it again. (I can’t find the link on the Sony site, but someone here found the link to older builds).

What’s the format of your source? What camera? You may be seeing CMOS rolling shutter artifacts.

Rolling Shutter (Jell-o Effect)
Rolling shutter is endemic on CMOS chips because of the progressive scanning nature of the electronics. The image is made from scanning top to bottom, much like you read a book. Rolling shutter artifacts occur when something changes in the frame in the time it takes the chip to be fully scanned from top to bottom,

Sorry – I dragged your file to the timeline, split it in a few places, added a text overlay, added som f/x and rendered it – no problems.
