Sony Vegas Pro 12 can’t load avi files

Don’t install any CODEC or CODEC pack until you fully understand what you are doing. You could be getting into a whole world of pain.

I looked at that MediaInfo info and I didn’t see the need for anything “Videolan”? Where is that?

OK, where or how did you get hold of this material? Do you have ANY material you can play inside VP12?

I have to say, saying that what you’ve done:

1] Install VP12

2] Your first usage is with some “suspect”-CODEC material doesn’t really help us to help you.

Try some other footage. Do you have a camera? Try some of that footage.

Sorry, but you’ve not been very forthcoming to allow me to make a determination. I’m not sure others here could be able to do it either?

So, start with something simple and work-up. If you get problems with simple, KNOWN to Vegas for easy import and you are STILL getting issues then get back here. As to loading unknown CODECs, from the get-go? Nah, don’t do it.

Sorry, So i’m a bit new to all of this, i’ve tried coverting the avi files into mpeg and they work just fine, the only problem is that the footage takes an hour or so to convert over to mpeg.

And i clicked to go to the codec on mediainfo and it took me to a videolan website, I don’t really know how else to explain it, and with vp12, I researched it and it’s some form of computer chip?

You need to install an AVC codec for Video for Windows. x264vfw might be a choice, but I have read reports that it is not actively developed and is quirky. AVC in an AVI file is unusual.

For AVI files, Vegas goes through the Video for Windows subsystem. This is an extremely old subsystem, depreciated since 1996. So anything, “new” like AVC you are going to need to install Video for Windows codecs to get it to work in Vegas. Vegas has AVC codecs but they are not used in Video for Windows files.

VideoLan is the organization that makes the VLC player, which can play pretty much anything because it does not rely on system codecs.

James, by any chance is that .avi some kind of a screen-capture file, using something like CamStudio? From a game? Sometimes those files are so compressed that Vegas and other NLE choke on them.

Opionions differ, but I don’t think AVI is the best container for OpenDML or x264.

Sorry I can’t offer more. But I agree with Graham – don’t screw around with codecs. You might try converting the file into something less compressed.

Yup, it did sound like a screen capture, via an elderly, arthritic CODEC.

Can that recorder output an MP4 or MOV file. You would be better off with those.
