Sony Vegas Pro 12 can’t load avi files

James, this might sound goofy, but one way to get really, really smooth “capture” of what you see on a game console is to video the screen with a video camera. I have done this with great success on several occasions. It avoids all the hassle of codecs, screen capture, dropped frames, etc.

Just be sure that you get the white balance perfect, the focus perfect, the camera exactly centered and normal to the screen, and make sure that the frame rate is not a multiple of the screen refresh rate, or you will get banding.

Have a look at this vid – I shot the Google Earth sequences during the 1st 30 sec on the video using that technique. The HDR-CX550V is not true 1920×1080, but it still came out OK for YouTube:
