Mark, although I have not watched the vids that Mike referenced, I bet they will open your eyes. I only recently had a change to watch some Lynda color correction training vids ( a gift from a buddy that uses Premier), and even though the software is very different, the principles cross platforms.

Build 511 was pretty buggy, so far 683 has not crashed on me … but the first time I do serious production work with SVP 11, it probably will!

Check out those links , and also use the Vegas scopes. It sure sounds like a levels problem to me, Studio RGB vs ComputerRGB. Scopes will show you a lot.

Just a quick reply.

I strongly urge you to use the standard, built-in Vegas codecs while learning. They are great for 95% of what anyone does, even professionals. For example, I have friends who make a living shooting wedding, sports, and concert videos. They have multiple cameras ranging in price from a few thousand (the venerable Sony FX1) to tens of thousands of dollars (Sony EX3, other XDCAM models).

They use Vegas 10 and 11, most of the rendering is with the Main Concept codec.

Work on understanding Vegas and perfect your camera work. Color Correction, white balance, exposure. Sharp, smooth video. Know when to cut and when to fade.

Details of the codecs and compression are not needed at this point in your learning curve and will only seek to distract. Spend your time shooting lots of footage and producing lots of videos.

Here is an analogy – if you are trying to learn piano, don’t get hung up on piano design. Buy a decent piano and play it a lot! You have a great cam and a great editor. Spend time with them.

I loooove my little CX550V! It is a true gem of a cam. Although it has it’s limits, I have recently discovered the joy of the one-push spot meter. It seems that every day I learn how to use it better … of course, there is always the one-push iAuto! The Active Steady shot is better than anything other than the new NX30.

I recently made a simple mounting plate rig that lets me put my Rode StereoVideo Mic right next to the CX550V on the tripod. That lets me use the Dead Kitten windscreen. The whole rig is light and easy to use. I mention this because on the ship there might be some wind.

I’ll post a pic of the rig soon, perhaps tomorrow.

BTW I love this little charger … with the right adapters it can be used all over the world (I used it in Chile last year)

Ditto what the OP said – open support incident. Don’t hold your breath for a fix, but they need to know and an incident makes it “official.”

Anything on the Sony forums? Last year I had a Sony support incident open for weeks ( DVDA 5.2 build 132 crash) and one day someone in the forum mentioned that build 133 was out, specifically fixed my crash. Would have been nice for the support people to email me, but it looks like my complaint reached the engineers!
