Good to hear that things are working well for you.

Right now is a good time to buy a desktop PC, because the popularity of tablets is hurting the PC market and with Windows 8 coming out soon, Dell and HP both have good bargains. I like both companies. I personally prefer name-brand PCs; some people like to build their own.

Get a computer with a minimum of 6 cores. I personally like to save money by going with a slightly lower clock speed than the fastest for a given model of computer.

A good graphics card is essential, I personally like nVidia, but other people like ATI.

RAM is good in general, but Vegas will be fine with 8 GB. But you might want to get 16 GB just to have it ..

Fast Disk IO is important. Here is where you can go crazy, with things like RAID 10 (striping and mirroring). If you want to keep it simple and cheap just be sure to get fast SATA drives with 10K RPM.

Hi;

First, avoid the term “clip”. Vegas uses tracks, they are arranged above and below each other. Within a track, there are events.

What you want to do is very easy.

Experiment with multiple tracks. Just drag your test footage to the timeline, create new tracks as needed. By default the upper tracks will be what is seen, but you can override that by adjusting the compositing mode of the track (it defaults to source alpha, but try Add, Multiply, and look at the results.

I’m a little puzzled by this. Transcoding to ProRes is not going to change, for example, 4:2:0 footage to 4:2:2 – or am I missing something? I’m trying to learn more about this topic.

Can you elaborate a bit? What camera was used for the shoot?

Also try adding an Audio Envelope to the track, that will let you set anchor points and vary the volume in different spots.

I’m embarrassed to admit I used Vegas for two years before I discovered audio envelope! Prior to that I did a bizarre combo of multiple audio tracks and fades to adjust volume … ;-p

Finally, (jumping in before Steve Rhoden does 😉 ) – in Vegas, use the terms tracks and events. Clip is not preferred.

First, and very important – try to not use the computer where the accidental delete happened, until you are ready to try to recover the files. The less you use it, the better the chances are that the sectors with the data will not be overwritten. Shut it off, use another computer to access the internet.

Second, try to get a full disk image snapshot/clone of the computer. Do that BEFORE you run any kind of undelete software, or even just messing with the recycle bin. I happen to have access to Symantec GHOST Enterprise, but there are plenty of other full image clone packages out there. Having a clone will give you a change to go back to where you were if the undelete efforts fail. You will need a cheap USB drive to hold the clone image, often it does not have to be as big as the source drive because compression will save space on the target.

For example, you might try the free open source https://clonezilla.org, but be aware that it is a Linux app and you will need to build a live, bootable Linux CD and be versed in Linux.
