Multiple drives are essential.

I use external drive bays (such as Nexstar) for SATA drives that hold the source media, and an internal Seagate SSD/platter Hybrid drive for Vegas temp files (set this location in Vegas). This way, Vegas is never writing different files to the same drive at the same time.

Try an SSD for your OS and the drive where Vegas runs. Buy something like a Corsair Neutron GTX for Windows. That will free up your 2 TB drive for the temp files.

Even with all this, renders are still very CPU-bound.

Experiment with lower quality/size in the Preview window, and also do not use “auto” for the window size. That eats up CPU. I know it is frustrating to not see sharp detail in the preview window; when you need that do a bit of Dynamic RAM preview

Run Process Explorer to see where your bottleneck is – CPU or GPU.

Not sure what you mean by “24 fps to film” .

Could it just be motion blur? Try shooting at 1/250 or 1/500 and see if it is still there.

What are your project settings? Render settings? What is the container and encoding of the video? (not all of use Canon so we don’t want to guess).

Which on-line service?

I’m still not sure what the actual frame rate in your browser will be when watching any given video on a computer in Europe. Your monitor refresh rate could be anything – mine happens to be 72 Hz. I encode to h.264 at 29.97 fps, progressive. According to this page, https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en , YT seems to want to preserve the native frame rate of a video, so if your video is 25 fps, and you encode to h.264 at 25 fps, the result just might appear on your monitor in Germany at 25 fps.

The same should be true for DVD and BluRay.

Television is a whole ‘nuther thing … in the UK, the BBC is very picky about what will be aired – they insist on a minimum of 4:2:0 color and 50 Mbps (usually MPEG-2). You might want to ask someone at a TV station what they require.

“Film look” means different things to different people.

To some it means shallow DoF aka “bokeh” (which I personally think is over-rated). To others it means 24 fps with the resulting motion blur (I also don’t like that, love EFR aka 48 fps as in the Hobbit or on a high-end TV). To others it means wide dynamic range like the 12 f-stops one can get with a Black Magic Cinema camera (that is amazing, but Youtube/h.264) will dumb it down.)

Assuming you start with great footage – no blown highlights, proper white balance and all that and properly color match and edit, what is left is to give YouTube a file that matches what YT wants; it will turn it into 30 fps so you might as well shoot in 29.97 … (others will vehemently disagree 😉 )

I personally yet great results in Vegas for YT using the h.264 MP4 preset, sometimes I bump it down from the 16 Mbps default to make the files smaller so they don’t take so long to upload.

Hi Chris;

Your question is difficult to answer because you have not given us much to go on – “BEST” is not a precisely defined term. What is your intended audience/format? Youtube? Blu-ray? An .mp4 on a usb thumb drive you hand to a buddy? What kind of footage?

I’m an IT pro by trade and do Vegas on the side as a hobby. I’ve spent the last 5 years learning video stuff and still feel ignorant… so don’t rush things. Read, read , read.

Hi Shawn;

First, I strongly recommend that you get a better picture of what your system is doing by installing Process Explorer. (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx) PE is safe, stable, and written by one of the biggest system gurus in the world – in fact, his software was so good that not only did Microsoft buy Mark Russinovich out, MS agreed to let him retain full control over all his software after the buyout.

After you install it, put it in startup so that it is always running. Customize the “tray icons” so that is shows all of them – IO. RAM, CPU, etc. PE will be able to show you exactly what the CPU and GPU are doing.

Here are some shots of the graphs while I rendered a small project on SVP 12. I have an nVidia Quadro 2000, and I just updated to the latest drivers (331.82). BTW, after the update ( I was at a very old 2012 version), Vegas started using more GPU, and render times got a bit better.

Process Explorer will show you:

* That Vegas is CPU/GPU bound (mostly)
* That Vegas does not need a lot of RAM
* If you have a disk IO bottleneck.

Be sure to set the Vegas temp file location on a drive other than the Windows OS drive, and also on a drive other than the one to which Vegas is building the rendered file.

SSD drives, if you can afford them, also seem to help. I have a friend who just build a new system, he configured it with a SanDisk SSD drive for Windows 7 Pro, and uses additional SSD drives for the render target and the temp files. His system is impressively fast for both rendering and video timeline preview. He has a very high-end Graphics card.

BTW everyone, sorry I have been gone so long. My wife was ill, near-death, but we managed to fix her up – lots of surgery. She is MUCH better, albeit disabled, but happy and able to do many things. I had a computer sitting in a box for nearly a year – a new Dell T7500 with 24″ Dell Ultrasharp. Finally built it, using it to post this! Happy Happy. Also have new Panny GH3 and a big backlog of projects. Yaay!
