Sony Vegas crashes when using the glow effect
Posted by Stephen Kennedy on May 10, 2012 at 1:48 amIt crashes plenty other times too and I’m not happy with that at all. But, this is the most consistent one and I’m hoping that if I get to the bottom of it then the other crashes might at least slow down a bit.
When I apply a glow effect and then close the effects window, it crashes every time. Like I said, it crashes when I apply other effects (or don’t apply them, sometimes it just crashes when I’m just scrubbing the timeline) but this is the only one that happens every time without fail. I tried saving before I closed the window and then I opened the project again. The glow effect was there and it was fine. I tested it by just opening the window again and closing it. Crash again. Here are the details of the problem.
I’m using Vegas pro 11 64-bit with Windows 7 64-bit.

May 10, 2012 at 5:41 amI have no problems with the Sony glow effect, so maybe it is video driver related. I’m using the same build 683 of SVP 11. I have an Nvidia GTX 570 with the 301.24 drivers. I have the GPU option turned on under Tools/Options/Video. Check the following directory for the GPU and other logs to see if any additional error information was logged.

INFO 2012-05-09 23:59:35Are those last few messages talking about my video device? It’s an ATI Radeon HD 5700 series with version 8.950.0.0 drivers. According to the system requirements for the program that should be fine shouldn’t it?

May 10, 2012 at 5:54 pmDo you mean turn disable GPU accelerated processing off? Because, it’s already off.

May 10, 2012 at 6:53 pmIt happened when it was on also. There seems to be no difference.

May 11, 2012 at 8:23 amI don’t have an AMD video card but according to Sony, you should have Catalyst driver 11.7 and I found 12.4 on the AMD site. It could be we are just reading different version numbers (Catalyst vs the driver).
https://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vegaspro/gpuacceleration
AMD/ATI
Requires an OpenCL-enabled GPU and Catalyst driver 11.7 or later with a Radeon HD 57xx or higher GPU. If using a FirePro GPU, FirePro unified driver 8.85 or later is required.
The release notes for Catalyst 12.4 states you have an older driver:
The AMD Catalyst software suite 12.4 contains the following:AMD display driver version 8.961
HydraVision™ for Windows Vista® and Windows® 7
Southbridge/IXP Driver
AMD Catalyst Control Center version 8.961 / AMD Vision Engine Control Center version 8.961 -

May 11, 2012 at 12:19 pmI actually have 12.3, but like I said I have GPU acceleration turned off. Also, I should mention that I’ve been using the glow effect in combination with masking. When I just use the effect by itself it doesn’t seem to cause a crash. But rather than focus on the effect I just want to know why this program is so unstable in general. If this keeps up I may just go back to 9 or 10.
I’ll upgrade to 12.4 and try turning on gpu acceleration again.

May 11, 2012 at 1:18 pmOkay, I’ve upgraded from 12.3 to 12.4. I opened the project, opened the effects window for the clip then closed it, and the program crashed. I tried it both with GPU acceleration on and off. The only difference was that when it was off, it didn’t crash the first time I closed the window. But, it was just a fluke. I tried it again just to be sure, and it crashed the second time.

May 11, 2012 at 4:59 pmWell, thanks for the effort. I’ve been doing some more intense testing of this specific crash and it’s less consistent than I thought it was, but it’s still more likely to crash than not. I keep feeling like there’s some underlying reason for all these crashes, glow effect or otherwise, that is easily fixed.
My overall crash frequency did not go down after the latest update. If anything, it increased. As I understand, I’m not the only one with this problem. Vegas is a great program but something about this version is just off. Even if this specific crash is dealt with in the next update, there are still plenty of others. I often edit for contests in which speed editing is important and I can’t afford all of these crashes. If the next update doesn’t fix it I’m going to have to go back to 9.0 which is the last version I know works (I was slow and skipped 10. No idea how stable it is). I don’t want to do that because I really love the new features when they work. How often would you say updates come around?
