Been using the XH-A1 for about a year with few issues (all use error, really) but I have found I preferred shooting with the HVR-Z1U as it had more “hardware” switches for camera controls such as audio input select, etc. Not sure how the V1U compares in this regard. On the whole, I don’t like digging through menus on a shoot.
But again, the Canon has been as good as any other HDV cam I’ve used when loading to FCP.

June 17, 2008 at 1:44 pm in reply to: Installing FCS and Logic on MacBook Pro – QuestionsWell, of course no need to reinstall STP (it’s the same version) and just check your HD space to determine how many loops and samples you really want to load up. I’ve had no problems with having the full installs of both FCS and Logic, with the full sample library, on my MacBook Pro.
If you’re worried about space issues with the additional media, someone on the LUG list said:
“you can install them on your system drive
(space allowing) and then move them to where ever, delete old index files and re-index by
dragging folder(s) into browser from finder.”But I have not tried that yet. Since Logic instruments (EXS, etc) load up all the samples in RAM before you can play them, a small firewire drive is probably the way to go for storing that library at some point.

My system is tied up on a render but as I recall you have several “User” columns (probably hiding all the way over to the right) which you can at the least re-order, if not rename.

Sorry for going to the obvious first – and I know this isn’t always as easy as it sounds in Excel, but is there not a formula you can create that computes the “Out TC” via “=”In TC”+”Duration” ?
Feel free to email me a copy of your template, I’d be happy to take a look.

If you are cuts-only for the assembly it won’t hurt you to work in straight HDV, but if you’ll be doing anything else you may want to capture this material as ProRes – it will make your life easier down the line, even for things like simple dissolves.

To Kevin’s question, if you have Adobe Flash installed, you also probably have the Flash Video Encoder (not sure if that’s the exact name) which is a stand-alone encoding option that will give you the option of choosing a player skin and outputting as a complete SWF – which you can do from several different video formats.

Larry Jordan on Lynda.com has a great tutorial, you can go right the chapter on multicam and do screen caps to save as a reference. Well worth the $25/month.

May 20, 2008 at 2:47 pm in reply to: Multi cam on a budget & capturing clips and automation of relative position in timeline?but in an effort to speed up workflow, I’ve just chosen to capture each 10min race in full, cueing them up on a 6 or 7 separate tracks in the timeline, and then chopping my way up and down the timeline.
If you’re loading everything anyway… why are you not just doing a visual synch at the start and using the multicam tool?
